Quick answer: The best temple in Egypt is Karnak in Luxor, for sheer scale and the 134 columns of its Great Hypostyle Hall. For sheer beauty we would pick Abu Simbel, with Philae close behind. Six of the big ten (Karnak, Luxor Temple, Hatshepsut, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae) are on a standard Luxor to Aswan cruise; Abu Simbel, Dendera, Abydos and Kalabsha are day trips.
Tickets (foreign adult) and hours are from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities site, egymonuments.gov.eg, checked 17 October 2026. The pages carry no effective date, so confirm at the gate. Dollars are approximate, at about 52 EGP.

The six cruise temples total EGP 3,090 (about US$59) per adult. Check whether your cruise fare includes site tickets.
The ranking in tiers
- Essential: Karnak, Abu Simbel, Philae, Hatshepsut, Luxor Temple.
- Worth it if your route allows: Edfu, Dendera, Kom Ombo, Abydos.
- Worth it with a spare Aswan half day: Kalabsha.
- Also worth it: Medinet Habu and the Ramesseum.
If you have:
- 1 day in Luxor: Karnak and Luxor Temple on the East Bank, Hatshepsut on the West Bank.
- 2 days in Luxor: add Medinet Habu or the Ramesseum to the West Bank, and give the second day to Dendera (or Dendera and Abydos together).
- A 4-night cruise plus 1 day in Aswan: the six cruise temples, then Abu Simbel on the extra day. With a further half day, add Kalabsha.
1. Karnak Temple, Luxor

Why it matters. Karnak was Ipet-Sut, "the most select of places", the great temple of Amun, and nearly every New Kingdom king added to it. The Great Hypostyle Hall has 134 columns, the central twelve 21 metres tall, and Hatshepsut's obelisk stands almost 30 metres.
Ticket extras. The ticket covers the Open Air Museum; the Mut precinct is separate, EGP 200 adult (Ministry, checked 17 October 2026).
Getting there. East Bank, about 3 km north of Luxor Temple along the Avenue of Sphinxes; Day 1 of a 4-night cruise. More in our Karnak Temple guide.
2. Abu Simbel
Why it matters. Ramesses II cut these two temples into the rock around 1264 BC, the smaller one for Hathor and Queen Nefertari. They were moved from their original site in 1968 in a UNESCO-led campaign, and they became a World Heritage Site in 1979. The sun reaches the statues in the inner sanctuary on 22 February and 22 October each year.
Ticket extras. On the two sun days it is EGP 1,200 adult (about US$23) (Ministry, checked 17 October 2026).
Getting there. Far south of Aswan and on no Luxor to Aswan cruise: go by road or air from Aswan, or on a Lake Nasser cruise. Our Abu Simbel day trip guide compares road and flight. A day trip from Aswan with hotel pickup starts from EGP 2,100 (about US$40, checked 17 October 2026).
3. Philae, Aswan

Why it matters. The Temple of Isis is mostly Ptolemaic, begun by Ptolemy II. It was moved to Agilkia Island to escape the dam waters, and the motorboat approach is part of the visit.
Ticket extras. The Ministry also lists a "temple panorama" ticket, EGP 200 adult and EGP 100 student, without saying what it covers, so ask before you buy it (checked 17 October 2026). We found no dated official boat fare; agree the price with the boatman first.
Getting there. It closes at 16:00, so if you visit on your own, go in the morning; cruise programmes time the Day 1 afternoon visit to fit the close. On a cruise it is Day 4 of a 4-night Luxor to Aswan sailing, with the High Dam, and the Day 1 afternoon of a 3-night Aswan to Luxor one (some ships move it to the Day 2 morning). See our Philae Temple guide.
4. Temple of Hatshepsut, Deir el-Bahari
Why it matters. The mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, the queen who ruled as pharaoh, set by her architect Senenmut on three terraces against the cliffs, directly across the Nile from Karnak. Look for the Punt reliefs, recording her expedition to a land believed to lie near modern Eritrea.
Ticket note. The Ministry's Hatshepsut Temple page lists EGP 440 adult and EGP 220 student; its Deir al-Bahari site page lists EGP 360 and EGP 180. Both checked 17 October 2026; bring enough for the higher one.
Getting there. Luxor's West Bank, paired with the Valley of the Kings; the Day 2 morning of a 4-night cruise, before the boat sails. More in our Hatshepsut Temple guide.
5. Luxor Temple
Why it matters. Luxor Temple was Ipet-resyt, the "southern sanctuary". During the Opet Festival the images of Amun, Mut and Khonsu were carried here from Karnak.
Getting there. Central Luxor, about 3 km south of Karnak; cruises usually pair the two on Day 1. Floodlit until 20:00, it suits the evening after a West Bank day. See our Luxor Temple guide.
6. Edfu, Temple of Horus
Why it matters. Edfu is dedicated to Horus, begun in 237 BC under Ptolemy III and finished in 57 BC under Ptolemy XII. The Ministry calls it one of the most complete temples in Egypt.
Hours note. The Ministry lists 06:00 on Sundays and Wednesdays and 07:00 on other days; plan on 07:00 to be safe (checked 17 October 2026).
On a cruise. The Day 3 morning of a 4-night Luxor to Aswan sailing; Day 2 of a 3-night Aswan to Luxor one, after Kom Ombo. Our Kom Ombo and Edfu guide covers both stops.
7. Dendera, Temple of Hathor
Why it matters. Dendera was the main cult centre of Hathor, goddess of music, joy and motherhood, and the Ministry calls it one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. Its ceilings carry astronomical carvings; see our Dendera zodiac explainer.
Ticket extras. The temple panorama and the serdab (crypt) are EGP 100 each (about US$2), checked 17 October 2026.
Getting there. Near Qena, about 75 km north of Luxor; allow at least an hour each way by road, more with checkpoints (our estimate). It is not on 3-night or 4-night cruises, only some 7-night and Cairo to Aswan sailings. There is a half-day Dendera tour from Luxor from EGP 2,929 (about US$56, checked 17 October 2026).
8. Kom Ombo, Temple of Sobek and Horus
Why it matters. A Graeco-Roman double temple to Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus the Elder.
Hours note. The Ministry lists 07:00 to 21:00 (checked 17 October 2026), which suits the evening cruise stop, but arrive well before 21:00 in case last entry is earlier.
On a cruise. The Day 3 evening of a 4-night Luxor to Aswan sailing; the Day 2 morning of a 3-night Aswan to Luxor one.
9. Abydos, Temple of Seti I
Why it matters. Seti I's temple is the furthest north of the cruise route, and the one most travellers skip. The Ministry has reported finishing the restoration of the temple's chapel to Amun-Ra.
Ticket and hours. We could not confirm either. The Ministry site has no Abydos page in English or Arabic (checked 17 October 2026), so ask your guide or at the gate.
Getting there. About 170 km from Luxor by road; allow at least 2 hours each way, often more with checkpoints and stops (our estimate, not an official figure). Only the long Cairo to Aswan cruise stops here, so most people pair it with Dendera in one long day. Read Abydos and Dendera from Luxor, or take a private day trip to Dendera and Abydos from EGP 5,231 (about US$101, checked 17 October 2026).
10. Kalabsha, Temple of Mandulis

Why it matters. The largest free-standing temple in Lower Nubia, built under Augustus for the Nubian god Mandulis. For the High Dam it was moved in 1962 and 1963 to New Kalabsha Island.
Ticket and hours. EGP 200 for foreign adults (about US$4), the cheapest on this list; 07:00 to 16:00 daily (Ministry, checked 17 October 2026). Worth it with a spare Aswan half day after Philae.
What else is on the island. You may read that Beit el-Wali and the Kiosk of Qertassi stand nearby; we could not confirm them or what the ticket covers from an official source on 17 October 2026, so ask at the ticket office.
How to get there. The temple is on an island, so you will need a boat across. We could not confirm the landing or a dated fare from an official source on 17 October 2026, so agree the price and the waiting time first. Lake Nasser cruises stop there; Luxor to Aswan Nile cruises do not.
To skip arranging the boat, a Kalabsha and Nubian Museum tour from Aswan runs from EGP 4,184 (about US$80, checked 17 October 2026); our Aswan travel guide fits it around Philae.
Also worth it: Medinet Habu and the Ramesseum
Both are on Luxor's West Bank and off the standard cruise programme.
Medinet Habu. Ramesses III's mortuary temple, entered through the towered High Gate.
The Ramesseum. Ramesses II's mortuary temple, its pylon carved with the Battle of Kadesh; a fallen statue of the king once stood more than 17 metres high.
A private tour of Medinet Habu, the Ramesseum and the Tombs of the Nobles starts from EGP 3,661 (about US$70, checked 17 October 2026).
Which temples a Nile cruise covers
The standard programme, from our cruise itineraries:
| Day | 4-night Luxor to Aswan | 3-night Aswan to Luxor |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Karnak and Luxor Temple | Aswan: High Dam and Philae in the afternoon (some ships move them to Day 2 morning) |
| 2 | West Bank: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Colossi; sail through the Esna lock | Kom Ombo and Edfu |
| 3 | Edfu and Kom Ombo | Luxor West Bank |
| 4 | Aswan: High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk, Philae | Karnak and Luxor Temple, then disembark |
| 5 | Disembark |
Both directions cover the same six temples; see Aswan to Luxor or Luxor to Aswan. Abu Simbel and Kalabsha are Lake Nasser cruise stops; the rest need extra days in Luxor.
