The 2027 eclipse from a dahabiya

The big ships and the dahabiyas split on eclipse day. 2 August 2027 is a Monday, and of the dahabiyas we list that leave on a Monday, 31 leave from Esna and 16 from Luxor, both inside the path of totality, against 1 from Aswan, which is outside it. A dahabiya on its usual Monday start is already in the right place.

This page builds on our main guide to the eclipse on the Nile, which has the path, the times by town, the weather and eye safety. Here is what changes when the boat is a dahabiya.

Counted from the departure days the operators publish in our directory. It is the usual weekly pattern, not a list of confirmed eclipse sailings: a boat that normally leaves Esna on a Monday may run a special programme that week, or not sail at all. The direction matters as much as the port. A dahabiya that embarks in Esna sails south, and the stretch it spends the first days on, Esna to Edfu, is inside the path.

The river

How much totality at each mooring

Totality shortens as the river runs south. A dahabiya moored near Luxor or Esna on the day gets close to six minutes; one that has already sailed past Edfu gets much less, and one at Aswan gets none.

The gap between Esna's 5m 45s and Kom Ombo's 3m 35s is the case for asking exactly where the boat will be tied up at 1 pm. A dahabiya can moor at a quiet bank rather than a town quay, which is one of the things that makes it good for this: a shaded deck, a couple of dozen guests at most, and nothing between you and the sky.

The boats

Which dahabiyas usually start in the path on a Monday

These 46 dahabiyas publish a Monday departure from Esna or Luxor. Each links to its page with cabins, rates and itineraries.

A second group, 15 boats, leaves Luxor on a Saturday. Two days into a southbound week they are usually somewhere between Esna and Edfu on the Monday, which is still inside the path, but the exact mooring varies, so it is the first thing to confirm.

Some boats have built a programme around the day. Turquoise sells an 8-day eclipse sailing from €3,300 per person, and the Merit fleet advertises a 2027 eclipse charter. For the wider market, operator listings for eclipse dahabiya weeks we have seen run from about €2,300 to €25,000 per person, depending on the boat and the length.

Before you book

Five things to ask the operator

  1. Is the boat sailing that week at all? Several dahabiyas pause for part of the summer.
  2. Where will it be moored at 1 pm on 2 August, by name? “Near Luxor” is not an answer.
  3. Is it moored or sailing during the eclipse? Moored is safer; a late start cannot cost you totality.
  4. What shade is there on the sun deck, and are the cabins air-conditioned?
  5. Are proper solar viewers supplied for every guest, from a supplier the American Astronomical Society lists?

Or send us your dates and group size and we will ask for you. If you would rather set the mooring yourselves, a whole-boat charter is how.

Asked often

Eclipse dahabiyas, answered

Can you see the 2027 eclipse from a dahabiya?
Yes, and a dahabiya is often better placed than a big ship. Most dahabiyas start their week in Esna or Luxor, both inside the path of totality, and 2 August 2027 is a Monday, their usual departure day. Totality lasts about 5m 45s at Esna and 6m 20s at Luxor, early in the afternoon local time.
Is Esna in the path of the 2027 eclipse?
Yes. Esna, where most dahabiyas embark, is inside the path with about 5m 45s of totality, from about 13:02 to 13:08 local time.
Do dahabiyas sail in August?
Many do, at their lowest fares, but not all. Some boats pause for part of the summer: Nour el Nil does not operate from June to August and Dahabiya Nile Sailing has a gap from about 7 June to 24 July 2027, for example. The eclipse week is the exception to summer pricing: boats that sail it charge a premium.
Is it too hot on a dahabiya in August?
It is hot: Luxor averages 42°C on 2 August and the eclipse falls in the heat of the day. Check that cabins are air-conditioned and that the sun deck has proper shade, and plan sightseeing for early morning.
Can we charter a whole dahabiya for the eclipse?
Yes. With 4 to 12 cabins, a dahabiya is the boat a family or a group of friends can take whole, and a charter is the one way to set the mooring and the timetable on the day yourselves. Some operators already advertise eclipse charters.
