The 2027 eclipse, and where to be on the Nile
Totality crosses the Nile between Qena and Kom Ombo. Luxor is the closest city on the river to the centre line, roughly 19 km from it, with about 6m23s of totality around 10:04 UT. Aswan misses it, sitting some 18 km outside the southern limit. And 2 August 2027 is a Monday, the busiest departure day on the river, which makes the direction you sail more important than the date you book.
Every figure on this page is read from the NASA GSFC eclipse path table, parsed on 2026-09-29. We have not rounded, restated or improved on it. What we have added is the part nobody joins up: which boats are actually in the right place that morning, from our own parse of the fleet's published departure days.

5 of the places we list are inside the path and 4 are outside. The band runs diagonally across the river, which is why two cities barely 200 km apart, Luxor and Aswan, fall on opposite sides of it.

Which boats are in the right place
The eclipse falls on a Monday, and Monday is when most of the Nile sails. That sounds convenient and is not. Of the boats we list departing on a Monday:

A boat leaving Aswan that morning starts outside the path and sails north into it over the following days, which is a day late. A boat leaving Luxor, or already moored on the Luxor to Kom Ombo reach, is in the right place at the right hour. - Can you see the 2027 eclipse from a Nile cruise?
- Yes, if the boat is on the right reach of the river. Totality crosses the Nile between Qena and Kom Ombo, so Luxor, Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo are all inside the path on Monday 2 August 2027. Luxor is the closest city on the river to the centre line, roughly 19 km from it, with a central duration of 6m23s at around 10:04 UT. Figures from NASA GSFC eclipse path table.
- Does Aswan see the total eclipse?
- No. Aswan sits about 18 km outside the southern limit on NASA's published line, so it gets a very deep partial eclipse rather than totality. The difference is not a matter of degree: outside the path the sun never fully disappears, the corona does not come out and the sky does not go dark. It is worth moving for, and 18 km is a short drive.
- Which departure day should I book for the eclipse?
- 2 August 2027 is a Monday, which happens to be the busiest departure day on the Nile. That is a trap rather than a convenience: 19 of the boats leaving that Monday leave from Aswan, which is outside the path, while 73 leave from Luxor and 31 from Esna, both inside it. A northbound sailing that starts at Aswan that morning begins outside totality. Check the direction, not just the date.
- How long will totality last on the Nile?
- About 6m23s on the centre line where it crosses the river, against a maximum of 6m23.2s anywhere along the whole track. Places nearer the edge of the path, Kom Ombo for instance, get noticeably less than places near the middle like Luxor.
- What time does it happen?
- Around 10:04 UT on the central line over Egypt. Local clock time depends on whether Egypt is observing summer time in 2027, which is a policy decision rather than an astronomical one, so we quote Universal Time and will confirm the local hour closer to the date.
- How far ahead should I book?
- As far as possible. We already have enquiries held up on Luxor hotel availability for 31 July and 1 August 2027, and the boats in the right place on the right day are a small subset of a small fleet. This is the one date on the Nile where being a year early is not early.
