Plan the whole trip

How many days do you need in Egypt, and on the Nile?

Plan ten days for a first trip to Egypt, with four nights of them on the Nile. A week is the minimum that feels complete: three nights in Cairo and a three- or four-night cruise between Luxor and Aswan. Two weeks lets you take a seven-night cruise or add the Red Sea.

What each trip length covers

How many days in Egypt and what they cover
DaysWhat fitsOur view
5 to 6 daysCairo and Luxor, no cruisePossible, but rushed. The river is the part people most often wish they had kept.
7 to 8 days2 to 3 nights Cairo, 3 or 4 nights on the NileThe shortest trip we would call complete for a first visit.
10 to 12 days3 nights Cairo, 4 nights on the Nile, plus Abu Simbel, a night in Luxor or a few days on the Red SeaThe best balance for most first-timers.
14 days or moreCairo, a 7-night cruise or a dahabiya, and the Red Sea, the desert or AlexandriaTime for the whole river and a proper rest.

For day-by-day plans, see the 7-day, 8-day and 10-day Egypt itineraries. For Cairo and the river together, see Cairo and a Nile cruise.

On the river

How many nights on the Nile?

Four nights, if you can. Three works; seven is for people who want the river itself to be the holiday.

Nile cruise lengths compared
LengthRouteWho it suits
3 nightsAswan to Luxor, downriverThe essentials at a brisk pace. Good when the trip is short.
4 nightsLuxor to Aswan, upriverThe most popular choice: the same temples with an extra day and more time in Luxor.
7 nightsRound trip from Luxor or AswanEvery major temple, unhurried. Some ships add Dendera and Abydos.
3 to 5 nights by dahabiyaEsna to Aswan, or the reverseSmaller boat, slower river, extra stops such as El Kab and Gebel el-Silsila.

Three- and four-night cruises cover the same core sites: Karnak and Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan. The difference is pace. Sailing upriver from Luxor takes a day longer, which is why the four-night cruise starts there. Compare 3-night, 4-night and 7-night cruises, or the day-by-day cruise itineraries.

Which boat

Boats for each length

If you have less

Only a few days?

With four or five days, choose between Cairo with a Luxor day by air, or a three-night cruise with a night in Cairo. Most people who have seen both would keep the river. See the 4-day Egypt itinerary and the 3-day Nile cruise.

Prices

What each extra night on the river costs

Nile cruise ships run about US$120 to US$1,500 per person per night and dahabiyas about US$140 to US$1,500. A night on board includes your cabin, meals and usually guided visits, so a longer cruise often costs less per day of sightseeing than hotels and separate tours. Ask us to price two lengths side by side.
