With children

Families: the school holidays

The October half-term and the Easter holidays are the best of the family weeks: warm enough for the pool, not too hot for the temples. Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year. A ship with a pool and family cabins is the easy choice, such as Sonesta St George or Historia; a dahabiya chartered for two or three families is the special one. For two

Couples: November and late winter

November and the weeks from late January to early March are calm, comfortable and outside most school holidays. Evenings on deck are cool enough for a jacket. For two, think of a suite on the Oberoi Zahra or Sonesta Star Goddess, or a small dahabiya such as The Orient. See a honeymoon on the Nile.

Value

Budget travellers: May to September

Prices are at their lowest from late spring to early autumn, and temples are far quieter. Luxor and Aswan are very hot by midday, so visits start at dawn and the afternoons are for the pool and the sun deck. The lull in early January after the New Year rush can also be good value. Ships run about US$120 to US$1,500 per person per night across the year. See the cheapest time to cruise the Nile.
