The best time for a Nile cruise
The short answer: October to April is the sweet spot, with warm days, cool nights and reliable sailing wind, and November is the month most often singled out. May to August is very hot, quieter and cheaper. Two practical things move the calendar as much as the weather does: the Esna lock's maintenance closures, and the khamaseen dust season.

The Esna lock closures (June and early December)
Every Luxor to Aswan cruise passes through the Esna lock, and it closes for maintenance for roughly the whole of June and the first week or two of December. Exact dates are set year by year and can shift or be cancelled, so they must be confirmed with the operator. During a closure ships cannot transit: they moor at Esna and passengers are coached to and from Luxor (about 30 to 45 minutes each way) for the usual sightseeing, so the Luxor half runs as a shortened land programme. If you are booking a June or early-December sailing, check the lock position first.
Khamaseen, the dust season (March to May)
From roughly March to May, and most intensely in April, hot dusty southerly winds called the khamaseen can blow up, cutting visibility for anything from a few hours to a day or two and sometimes forcing open-deck meals or a balloon flight to be rescheduled. It is not constant and does not ruin a trip, but if you sail in spring it is worth leaving a little slack in the plan.
Sailing wind, and why a dahabiya prefers winter
The prevailing wind on this stretch of the Nile is northerly, which is exactly why dahabiyas sail best southbound, upstream towards Aswan, and are tug-assisted when the wind drops. The clear, settled winter months from October to April give the steadiest sailing, and they are the busiest dahabiya months for that reason. Summer is the quietest dahabiya period, driven by the heat on an open deck rather than any fleet-wide shutdown.
Ramadan (2026 and 2027)
Ramadan falls in mid-February to mid-March in these years: roughly 18 February to 20 March 2026, and 8 February to 10 March 2027 (the exact start depends on the moon sighting and can shift by a day). Cruises run as normal, but expect reduced daytime service in shops and cafes ashore, and a livelier atmosphere after sunset. On board, meals continue as usual.
