The best time for a Nile cruise, month by month
October to April is the season: Luxor highs run from about 23 C in January to 35 C in October, every ship is sailing and the sun deck is usable all day. November is the month most often rated best, and February and March give the best balance of weather, crowds and price. December and January have the coolest days, the fullest temples and the highest fares. From May to September highs reach 39 to 42 C, fares fall to the summer rate, and sightseeing moves to dawn and dusk.
The short answer: October to April is the season, with warm days, cool nights and a reliable sailing wind, and November is the month most often singled out. May to September is very hot, quieter and priced at the summer rate, but it is not a shutdown: the Egyptian fleet sails all year and only a few ships pause. Two practical things move the calendar as much as the weather: the festive price bands at Christmas, New Year and Easter, and the khamsin dust season in spring.

The verdict
Which month is best for a Nile cruise?
November, if you can choose freely: Luxor highs of 29 C, cool evenings, a calm river, every ship sailing and prices in the high band but well short of Christmas. February and March are the runners-up, with the khamsin as the only risk. Choose December or January for the coolest sightseeing weather and accept the crowds and the peak fares; choose May or September to pay summer rates without the worst of the heat.
- 1For weather alone: December to February. Highs of 23 to 25 C in Luxor are perfect for standing in open temple courts; nights drop to 7 to 9 C, so pack a layer for the West Bank at dawn and the deck after dinner.
- 2For the balance: November, February, March. Warm, clear and calm, with fares in the standard high band rather than a festive one. November is the month the operators themselves point to.
- 3For price: May, June and September. Summer rates, about 15 to 25 per cent below winter on the same ship, with highs of 39 C rather than 41. June is the cheapest and the emptiest; September is priced as summer by some sellers and winter by others, so ask.
- 4For a dahabiya: October to April. The steady northerly is what fills the sails; summer is quiet for sailing boats and Nour el Nil does not operate June to August.
- 5Avoid if you can: the festive bands. 22 December to early January and the week around Easter (28 March 2027) are priced as peak on every ship that publishes bands, and the popular ships book out months ahead.
Season by season
Winter, shoulder and summer on the Nile
High season: October to April
Every ship and every dahabiya is sailing, the temples are busiest between 9 and 11 in the morning, and most sellers charge their winter rate. December and January are peak within the peak. Book three to six months ahead for the popular ships, six to nine for Christmas, New Year and Easter. The khamsin can bring a hot dusty day or two between March and May.
The shoulders: May, September, October
The best value on the river. May and September carry summer rates on most rate sheets with highs of about 39 C; October carries winter rates but moderate crowds and 35 C days. If you sightsee early and rest at midday, these are the months to pay less for the same ship. September is the one month priced two ways by different sellers.
Summer: June to August
Highs of 41 to 42 C. The Egyptian fleet keeps sailing at its lowest fares; the Oberoi ships skip June, AmaWaterways and Uniworld sit out July and August, Viking thins out. Ships are air-conditioned and the pool is in constant use; the pattern is temples at 6 am, the ship by 11, the deck after 5. In 2027 the eclipse on 2 August is the one summer week priced above Christmas.
What the calendar costs
Nile cruise prices by season
Most ships publish two rates, summer (May to September) and winter (October to April), about 15 to 25 per cent apart, and a third band for the festive weeks. On a mid-range ship a 4-night cruise is a median of US$854 in summer, US$1,000 in winter and US$1,230 at Christmas, New Year and Easter, per person sharing.

Festivals, holidays and Ramadan, October 2026 to December 2027
Four dates move Nile cruise prices: Christmas and New Year (22 December to 1 January), Western Easter (28 March 2027), the Abu Simbel sun festivals (22 February and 22 October) and, in 2027 only, the total solar eclipse over Luxor on 2 August. Ramadan runs from about 8 February to 8 March 2027 and changes the mood ashore, not the cruise.

Not a shutdown
Which ships pause in summer, and which keep sailing
“Cruises stop in summer” is false as a blanket statement. The Egyptian fleet sails all year. The pauses are ship by ship: the Oberoi Philae and Zahra skip June, AmaWaterways runs no departures in July and August 2027, Uniworld none from 22 May to 11 September 2027, and Viking keeps sailing but thins out from mid-June to late July. No published calendar was found for Sanctuary, Sonesta, Steigenberger, Mövenpick or Scenic.

November, February or March: the Oberois, Sanctuary and the boutique ships are in their high band rather than the peak band, the weather is at its best, and the small-ship advantage (private moorings, early temple slots) counts most when the river is busy. Avoid June if you want an Oberoi: neither sails.

- 06:30 Sunrise. Balloons are already up over the West Bank; a fleece for the first hour.
- 07:30 to 12:00 Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut in comfortable warmth. The tombs are busiest from 9 to 11.
- 13:00 Lunch as the ship sails; the whole afternoon on deck is pleasant, no shade required.
- 17:05 Sunset. Dinner indoors or on deck with a jacket; the galabeya party if it is that night.
A July day, Luxor: 41 C by day, 26 C at night
- 05:00 Alarm. The West Bank at 06:00 opening is the whole point; two litres of water each.
- 10:30 Back on board before the heat peaks. Pool, lunch, cabin, a long siesta as the ship sails.
- 17:00 to 19:45 Kom Ombo or Edfu in the late light, which is when the ships time them in summer; sunset 19:45.
- 21:00 Dinner on deck in 30 C. The river is empty, the fare was a quarter less, and the temples were yours at dawn.

UK and US school holidays, 2026/27
For UK families the October half-term (26 to 30 October 2026), February half-term (15 to 19 February 2027) and Easter holidays all fall in the season; for US families Thanksgiving week and the winter break do. The Christmas weeks are the most expensive on the river for everyone; October half-term and February half-term are the value windows.

Term dates vary by authority and district; these are the reference calendars in the sources. UK direct flights to Luxor (easyJet and TUI from Gatwick, TUI from Manchester) run seasonally from roughly October to May; from the US you fly to Cairo and connect.

What to pack, by season
October to April
Layers: a fleece or jacket for 06:00 starts and evenings on deck (7 to 13 C nights in December to February), light trousers and long sleeves for temples, a scarf that doubles as sun cover, a hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes for uneven stone, a torch for the mooring, and something smarter for the gala or galabeya night. Small notes in dollars or Egyptian pounds for tips.
May to September
Everything light and covering: linen or technical long sleeves rather than vests, a wide hat, high-factor sunscreen, electrolyte sachets, a refillable bottle (bottled water on board is EGP 40 to 80), swimwear for the pool and a cover-up for the deck. Sunglasses matter more than in winter. Evenings stay above 25 C, so no layer needed.
All year
Passport with six months’ validity and the US$30 visa (e-visa or on arrival), a photocopy of both, a basic first-aid kit and stomach remedies, modest dress for temples and villages, a power bank (cabin sockets are few), and a local SIM or eSIM bought on arrival, because ship Wi-Fi is slow and often paid.
The details that move the calendar
The Esna lock, the khamsin, the wind and Ramadan
The Esna lock, and the winter irrigation shutdown
Every Luxor to Aswan cruise passes through the Esna lock, about 48 km south of Luxor. Older guides say it closes for maintenance every June and for the first weeks of December; Egyptian officials say a second lock, built in 2008, keeps traffic moving while the other is maintained, and no closure dates for 2026 or 2027 have been published. Reports of a two-month closure from September 2026 were denied by the Esna city authorities. The regular event that does affect the river is the annual irrigation shutdown (al-sudda al-shitawiya), when the ministry cuts releases and the Nile drops for about a month from late December (in Luxor, 31 December 2025 to 6 February 2026 last season, with a full closure from 13 to 27 January). Ships sail through it, but if you are booking January dates, ask the operator what the lock and the water level mean for your route.
Khamsin, the dust season (March to May)
From roughly March to May, most intensely in April, hot dusty southerly winds called the khamsin can blow up, cutting visibility for anything from a few hours to a day or two and sometimes forcing open-deck meals or a balloon flight to be rescheduled. It is not constant and does not ruin a trip, but if you sail in spring it is worth leaving a little slack in the plan.
Sailing wind, and why a dahabiya prefers winter
The prevailing wind on this stretch of the Nile is northerly, which is exactly why dahabiyas sail best southbound, upstream towards Aswan, and are tug-assisted when the wind drops. The clear, settled winter months from October to April give the steadiest sailing, and they are the busiest dahabiya months for that reason. Summer is the quietest dahabiya period, driven by the heat on an open deck; Nour el Nil does not sail from June to August.
Ramadan 2027 (about 8 February to 8 March)
Ramadan 2027 is expected to run from about 8 February to 8 March, with Eid al-Fitr on 9 to 11 March; the exact dates depend on the moon sighting and can shift by a day. Cruises run as normal, meals on board continue as usual and most tourist ships keep serving alcohol, sometimes only in designated bars. In Ramadan 2024 the sites in Luxor, Aswan and Qena kept normal opening hours while museums elsewhere closed early; 2027 hours had not been announced when this was checked. Expect quieter afternoons ashore and livelier evenings.

When is the best time to take a Nile cruise?
October to April, for warm days (23 to 35 C in Luxor), cool nights and a reliable sailing wind. November is the month most often rated best; February and March give the best balance of weather and price. It is also the busy season, so book ahead.
When is the cheapest time for a Nile cruise?
May to September, when Upper Egypt is very hot and most sellers switch to summer rates, about 15 to 25 per cent below winter on the same ship. May and September are the good-value months: the heat is easing or not yet at its worst, and crowds are light.
Is the Esna lock closed in June?
It is contested. Older guides say the lock closes for maintenance every June and early December; Egyptian officials say a second lock, built in 2008, keeps traffic moving during maintenance, and no closure dates for 2026 or 2027 have been published. Ask the operator for your dates rather than assuming a closure.
How hot is a Nile cruise in summer?
Very hot. Luxor and Aswan average highs of about 41 to 42 C from June to August, so sightseeing works only in the early morning and evening. Ships are air-conditioned and the pool is in use; it is doable if you plan the day around the heat, and it is the cheapest time to sail.
Do Nile cruises stop in summer?
No. The Egyptian fleet sails all year. A few ships pause: the Oberoi Philae and Zahra skip June, AmaWaterways runs no departures in July and August, Uniworld none from late May to early September, and Viking thins out from mid-June to late July. Nour el Nil's dahabiyas pause June to August.
Does Ramadan affect a Nile cruise?
Cruises run through Ramadan (about 8 February to 8 March in 2027), meals on board continue as normal and most tourist ships keep serving alcohol. Daytime service in shops and cafes ashore is reduced and the evenings are livelier; temple hours in Luxor and Aswan stayed normal in Ramadan 2024.
What is the best month for a Nile cruise?
November, for warm clear days (Luxor high 29 C), a calm river and prices in the high band but below the Christmas peak; February and March are the next best. December and January have the coolest days but the fullest temples and the highest fares.
What is the best month to tour Egypt?
For Egypt as a whole, as on the river, October to April is the season and November is the month most often singled out: warm days, cool nights and prices below the Christmas peak. The shoulders either side, October to November and March to April, give the best all-round trip; December to February has the most comfortable sightseeing weather with the biggest crowds and highest prices, and June to August is cheap but very hot inland. The weather is ideal (Luxor 24 C by day, 9 C at night) and the atmosphere festive, but it is the most expensive and most-booked window of the year: the Oberoi Zahra's peak band runs 22 December to 1 January, mid-range ships publish festive fares around US$1,230 for 4 nights against US$1,000 in the rest of winter, and cabins go months ahead.
When is the 2027 solar eclipse in Egypt?
2 August 2027. Luxor lies near the centre line, with totality from about 13:02 to 13:08 local time (6 minutes 22 seconds), in the peak of summer heat. Ships that sell it price the week above their Christmas rates: the Oberoi Zahra's eclipse band (27 July to 2 August) is US$10,750 per adult for 4 nights against US$6,230 at New Year.
When are the Abu Simbel sun festivals?
22 February and 22 October each year, when the rising sun reaches the inner sanctuary of the Great Temple. The February festival draws the larger crowd; October is quieter. The ticket rises to EGP 1,200 on those two days, and the site is a day trip from Aswan, not a cruise stop.
