Occasions
The Nile has some of the most beautiful settings in the world for a proposal: the sun deck at sunset, a felucca off Aswan, an island dinner on a dahabiya or a balloon over Luxor at dawn. The trick is timing it with the boat’s itinerary and letting the crew know in advance, quietly. A small boat makes both easier.
The settings
Choosing
A small boat. On a dahabiya of ten or twelve guests, the crew can set up a private corner of the deck or a table ashore without an audience. The Orient (ten guests), Loulia (twelve, with balcony suites) and Lazuli Highness (ten, with a stern terrace) are good choices; for complete privacy, charter the whole boat (see private dahabiya charters).
On a ship, choose a small one such as the Oberoi Zahra (54 guests) or Historia, and book a suite with a terrace or balcony.
Checklist
Good to know
Egypt is a conservative country, and big public displays of affection draw attention at temples and in town. On board, on a felucca or on your own terrace, there is no such concern. That is one more reason to propose on the water rather than in front of a temple crowd.
Afterwards
Many couples come back to the Nile for the honeymoon. See a honeymoon on the Nile, or, for the wedding itself, weddings and vow renewals on the Nile.
