Festive season 2026/27

Christmas and New Year on the Nile, 2026/27

The week from about 21 December to 1 January is the busiest and most expensive of the year on the Nile, often 25 to 50 per cent above the normal winter rate. Most boats sail fixed days each week, so the day you start decides whether you are on board for Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. Small dahabiyas, with ten to twenty guests, fill first. If you are travelling this year, ask now.

Sailing days are each boat’s published pattern for 2026 and 2027 and can change. Boats starting at Esna meet you in Luxor, about an hour’s drive north. The Sonesta Amirat Dahabeya sails seven nights every Saturday, so the 19 December departure covers Christmas and the 26 December departure covers New Year.

Prices

What the festive weeks cost

Through the year, Nile cruise ships cost about US$120 to US$1,500 per person per night and dahabiyas about US$140 to US$1,500. Over Christmas and New Year, expect the top of each boat’s own range: typically 25 to 50 per cent above its normal winter rate.

The uplift comes in two forms. Some boats publish a separate peak fare for the festive weeks; others keep the winter fare and add a compulsory supplement, sometimes as much as half again, or charge for the gala dinner separately. When you compare quotes, ask whether the festive supplement and gala dinner are already included. For the full price picture, see how much a Nile cruise costs.

On board

Gala dinners, and what the evening is like

Many ships hold a gala dinner on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, with a set menu, music and, on New Year’s Eve, a countdown on deck. On a dahabiya the evening is smaller and often more memorable: dinner on deck or on a riverbank, with the crew’s own music. Either way, the next morning starts early, because temple visits do not stop for the holiday.

If you want a quieter Christmas, a small boat is the better choice. If you want a party, choose a larger ship and ask what its programme includes.

Worth knowing

The January low water

Each winter Egypt cuts the water released into the Nile for maintenance of the irrigation canals, and the river drops for about a month from late December. Last season it ran in Luxor from 31 December 2025 to 6 February 2026, with a full closure from 13 to 27 January. Boats keep sailing, but timings and moorings can change. If your trip runs into January, ask what the low water means for your route. See when to go for the full calendar.

Choosing

Ship or dahabiya for the festive weeks?

Ships have more cabins, so they are easier to find late. Among them, Historia, the Oberoi Zahra, Sonesta St George and Sonesta Star Goddess are the ones we recommend most. Dahabiyas carry ten to twenty guests, so a whole family or group can take one over, which is the most private way to spend Christmas on the river. Start with the best dahabiyas by what you want, or what a whole boat costs.

December mornings and evenings are cool on deck, averaging about 9 °C at dawn in Luxor and 11 °C in Aswan, so pack a warm layer.

Asked often

Christmas and New Year on the Nile, answered

Can you do a Nile cruise over Christmas?
Yes. Every ship and dahabiya sails through the festive weeks, and late December is one of the most popular times of the year, with cool, sunny days. Book early: these are the first weeks to sell out.
Which Nile cruise departure is on board for Christmas Eve 2026?
On the many boats that sail south on Mondays, the Monday 21 December departure from Luxor or Esna is on board for Christmas Eve and reaches Aswan on Christmas morning. The Friday 25 December sailing north from Aswan is on board for Christmas Day evening.
Which Nile cruise departure is on board for New Year's Eve 2026?
On Monday-departure boats, the Monday 28 December sailing from Luxor or Esna to Aswan spends New Year's Eve on board and arrives on 1 January. On boats that sail south on Saturdays, the Wednesday 30 December sailing north from Aswan covers New Year's Eve.
How much more does a Nile cruise cost at Christmas and New Year?
Expect roughly 25 to 50 per cent above the normal winter rate. Some operators add a compulsory festive supplement or a gala dinner charge on 24 and 31 December. Across the year, cruise ships run about US$120 to US$1,500 per person per night and dahabiyas about US$140 to US$1,500.
Is January a good time for a Nile cruise?
Yes, it is the coolest month and very good for sightseeing, but it falls inside the annual irrigation shutdown, when the river drops for about a month from late December. Boats keep sailing, but ask whether your dates are affected before you book.
