Planning your Egypt trip for the 2027 eclipse
Book the bed you will sleep in on the night of 1 August 2027 first, because that decides whether you wake up inside the path: a boat moored in Luxor, Esna or Edfu, or a hotel in Luxor. Then the flights. Plan to be in place at least a day early, and build the rest of the trip around it. When we counted in September 2026, 43% of the Egyptian eclipse cruise products listed in one directory already showed sold out or waitlist.
The timeline
When to book what
- 1Now. Your bed for 31 July and 1 August: the eclipse boat or a Luxor hotel. These are the scarce part, and the right boats in the right place are a small part of the fleet.
- 2Now, or as soon as schedules open. International flights. Summer is low season in Egypt, so seats and fares are normally easy, but eclipse demand changes that for the days just before 2 August.
- 3Early 2027. Domestic flights or the sleeper train to Luxor, travel insurance that covers cancellation, and eclipse glasses from a listed supplier.
- 4Spring 2027. Watch for the ministry's announcements on viewing sites, temple hours and extra flights, and adjust plans.
- 5The last week. Short-range forecasts for haze or cirrus. In Upper Egypt the main question is dust, not cloud.
Into the path
Getting to Luxor
Most travellers arrive in Cairo and fly about an hour south to Luxor, or take the overnight sleeper train, about 9 to 10 hours. From Hurghada it is about 280 km by road to Luxor, 3.5 to 4 hours via Safaga and Qena. Some airlines fly to Luxor directly from Europe; check for eclipse-week flights as schedules are published. Arrive by 31 July at the latest, so a delayed flight or a missed connection does not cost you the eclipse.

Five ways to build the trip
- 1A Nile cruise that ends in Luxor on eclipse day. Kleos sails Aswan to Luxor, Friday 30 July to Monday 2 August 2027. You sail north past Kom Ombo and Edfu and wake up in Luxor, inside the path, on the morning of the eclipse. Add Cairo before.
- 2Luxor first, then a cruise that starts on eclipse day. Two or three hotel nights in Luxor, watch the eclipse there, then board in the afternoon: a Nile Crown ship sails Luxor to Aswan, Monday 2 to Friday 6 August 2027.
- 3A dahabiya moored in the path. Several dahabiyas start from Esna or Luxor on a Monday, so they are in the path on the morning of 2 August. Ask where the boat will be moored at midday.
- 4The Red Sea. Stay at Marsa Alam, inside the path with about 5m 30s of totality from 13:08, and combine beach and diving with a few days in Luxor.
- 5Cairo and the desert. Drive from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis, about 6m 17s of totality and among the clearest skies on the whole track, with a night camping in the Black or White Desert.

A plan for eclipse day in Luxor
- 1Early morning. Any sightseeing, finished before the heat. Then rest, eat, drink.
- 2By about 11:00. Leave for your viewing spot if it is not where you slept. Expect heavy traffic.
- 311:40. First contact. In the shade, glasses ready.
- 413:02 to 13:08. Totality, 6m 20s. Out into the open, glasses off.
- 514:26. Last contact. Back into air conditioning; the roads will be busy for a while.
- 6Evening. Board your boat, or stay another night and let the crowds leave first.

Eclipse week is priced well above the rest of the summer. Check your own nationality's visa rules for Egypt well ahead, and buy insurance that covers cancellation as soon as you book.

- How far in advance should I book for the 2027 eclipse in Egypt?
- Now, for the night of 1 August 2027 and the boat or hotel that puts you inside the path. Boats in the right place on the right day are a small part of the fleet, and many eclipse cruises already showed sold out or waitlist in late 2026.
- When should I arrive in Luxor for the eclipse?
- By 31 July at the latest, so you have a spare day if a flight is delayed. Eclipse tour operators plan to arrive at least a day early for the same reason.
- Is it better to watch the eclipse from a Nile cruise or a hotel?
- Either works if you are in Luxor or another town inside the path at midday. A boat moored in Luxor saves a transfer; a hotel lets you board a cruise that same afternoon. A boat at Aswan misses totality.
- Can I see the eclipse on a trip from Cairo?
- Not from Cairo itself, which sees about 95 per cent. Fly or take the sleeper train to Luxor, or drive to Bahariya Oasis in the Western Desert, which is inside the path.
- What is the best itinerary for the 2027 eclipse in Egypt?
- A few days in Cairo, then a Nile cruise or dahabiya that is moored in Luxor, Esna or Edfu on the morning of 2 August, with a spare day before the eclipse in case of delays.
