Before you pay

Nile cruise booking red flags

The most common Nile cruise problem is not the river but the booking: a package sold as “5-star cruise or similar” that turns out to be an older, cheaper boat. Before you pay, get the exact boat name in writing, with the dates, the direction, the cabin type and a clear list of what is included and what is extra. Be wary of prices far below the rest of the market, of star ratings with no boat named, and of any seller who will not confirm the boat until after payment.

Watch for

Seven red flags

  1. 1"Or similar". Lets the seller move you to any boat of a claimed category. Ask for the named boat, or at least a short list of named boats.
  2. 2Star ratings with no boat named. Five-star means very different things on the Nile. A 2021 boutique ship and a tired 1990s ship can both be sold as five-star.
  3. 3A price far below everyone else. Usually an older boat, the lowest deck, a short itinerary or a long list of extras. Compare like with like.
  4. 4"4 nights" that feels like 3. Day one is boarding and lunch, the last morning is breakfast and leaving. Check what is visited on each day.
  5. 5Sightseeing "optional". Some cheap packages leave out the guide and entrance fees, so the temples become extras on board.
  6. 6A last-minute boat change. Boats are sometimes swapped for real reasons, such as repairs. The replacement should be the same standard or better, and you should be told before you travel.
  7. 7No written confirmation. A WhatsApp promise is not a booking. Ask for a confirmation that lists everything.

Comparing two offers fairly

Put the offers side by side by boat, cabin type, nights, inclusions and extras, then compare the price. A higher price that includes guiding, entrance fees and transfers is often cheaper in the end. Nile cruise ships run about US$120 to US$1,500 per person per night and dahabiyas about US$140 to US$1,500. Asked often

Booking a Nile cruise safely, answered

What does "or similar" mean on a Nile cruise?
That the seller can put you on any boat it considers the same category. Ask for the named boat in writing before you pay, so you know exactly what you are getting.
Can a Nile cruise company change my boat?
It happens, sometimes for real reasons such as repairs. A fair seller tells you before you travel and moves you to a boat of the same standard or better. Your confirmation should name the boat.
Why are some Nile cruises so cheap?
Usually an older boat, a lower deck, a shorter real itinerary, or sightseeing, guides and entrance fees sold as extras. Compare what is included, not just the price.
What should a Nile cruise booking confirmation include?
The boat's name, dates, direction, nights on board, cabin type, what is included, what is extra, and the payment and cancellation terms.
How do I know a Nile cruise company is real?
Look for a company licensed in Egypt, a named boat, a written confirmation before payment, and someone who answers your questions in detail. Be wary of anyone who only takes cash or refuses to name the boat.
