Egypt Honeymoon Itinerary: A Romantic 10 Days on the Nile & Red Sea

Days 1-2: Cairo and the Pyramids, done privately

Start with the icons, but on your own terms. A private guide and driver means you're not sharing the Giza plateau story with 40 strangers. Day 3: Fly to Aswan, Egypt's most romantic city

Aswan is where the Nile is at its loveliest, wide, island-strewn and unhurried. Fly down from Cairo and spend the afternoon at the Temple of Philae, reached by a short motorboat across the water, which is half the magic. As the light drops, take a private sunset felucca, a traditional lateen-sail boat; the ride is most beautiful precisely here, on Aswan's island-studded stretch around Elephantine Island. Days 4-6: The dahabiya, the honeymoon centrepiece

Here's where an Egypt honeymoon separates itself from an ordinary tour. Instead of a large motor cruiser, book a dahabiya, the most intimate Nile option: a small, elegant sailing houseboat, typically 18 to 20 guests or fewer, and often chartered privately. It moves at the wind's pace, moors at sandbanks and villages the big ships can't reach, and turns the journey itself into the experience. Think breakfast on deck as the banks slide by, swimming off the boat, and evenings under more stars than you've seen in years.

Dahabiya sailings run three to seven nights. The three-night version departs from Aswan, while longer sailings start further north at Esna. Timed for sunrise and running about 45 to 60 minutes with hotel pickup, it floats roughly 300 metres above the temples and the Valley of the Kings, and private flights can carry just the two of you. Days 8-10: The Red Sea wind-down

After a week of early starts and ancient stone, the honeymoon needs a soft landing. The three Red Sea bases each have a character: Hurghada offers the widest hotel choice, Sharm El Sheikh has world-class house reefs and a Sinai backdrop, and Marsa Alam is the quietest of the three. Spend on the moments that are irreplaceable and save on the rest. As a rough guide for ten days, per person and excluding international flights: a budget trip runs about USD 800 to 1,200, mid-range about USD 1,800 to 3,000, and luxury from around USD 4,500 to 8,500 and up. Put another way, a comfortable mid-range honeymoon lands near USD 2,800 to 4,500 per couple, with a five-night full-board cruise and excursions costing roughly USD 1,000 to 2,000 for two. When to go, and a few couple's notes

October to April is the sweet spot, mild and dry. October and November in particular bring pleasant temperatures, fewer tourists and lower rates, with the mercury around 20 to 30C (68 to 86F), warm enough for the beach and comfortable for temples. A little cultural awareness keeps things smooth. Cover shoulders and knees at sites and in the streets, carry a light scarf, and women should cover their hair in mosques. Hand-holding between a married couple is perfectly fine, but public kissing and passionate displays are considered offensive and can even be legally risky, so keep affection low-key in public. If you travel during Ramadan, be discreet about eating, drinking and smoking in daylight and dress a touch more conservatively.
