7 Days in Egypt: The Perfect First-Timer Itinerary (2026)
The classic week in Egypt, day by day: Cairo, Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then the Nile between Luxor and Aswan by cruise. The route most first-timers should take, what to book, and how to pace it.
Seven days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Egypt: long enough for the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the great Nile temples, short enough to plan as one clean loop. The trick is to fly between Cairo and Luxor rather than driving, and to let a Nile cruise carry you between the southern temples. Here is the route most first-timers should take, day by day. See it laid out on the interactive map.
At a glance
Cairo and Giza for three nights, a short flight to Luxor, then a three to four night Nile cruise to Aswan, flying home from Aswan or back via Cairo. Book the domestic flights and the cruise well ahead, especially in the October to April high season.
Day 1: Cairo, arrive and ease in
Land, settle, and take it slow; jet lag and Cairo traffic are enough for one day. An evening felucca or a Nile dinner cruise is the gentlest possible introduction to the city. Base yourself near Giza for pyramid views or in leafy Zamalek for restaurants and calm. See the Cairo travel guide.
Day 2: Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum
The headline day. Spend the cooler morning at the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, then cross to the Grand Egyptian Museum next door, home to Tutankhamun's complete treasure. It is a great deal of wonder for one day, so pace yourself and break for lunch. Guides: the Pyramids and the GEM.
Day 3: historic Cairo
Give the morning to Islamic Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, climb the Citadel for the panorama, and spend the afternoon in Coptic Cairo or the Tahrir Egyptian Museum. If you would rather slow down, swap one of these for a half-day south to the quieter pyramids of Saqqara and Dahshur.
Day 4: fly to Luxor, board the cruise
A short morning flight to Luxor. See the East Bank: Karnak in the day and, if your timing allows, a floodlit Luxor Temple after dark. Board your Nile cruise in the afternoon and watch the riverbank slide past from the sundeck. See the Luxor guide and the Nile cruise guide.
Day 5: Luxor's West Bank and a sunrise balloon
An optional pre-dawn hot-air balloon over the Theban hills, then the Valley of the Kings, the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. Sail south in the afternoon. See the Valley of the Kings guide.
Day 6: Edfu and Kom Ombo
The quiet pleasure of the cruise. Stop at the wonderfully preserved Temple of Horus at Edfu and the riverside double Temple of Kom Ombo, with long hours of deck time in between watching a timeless riverbank go by. Sunset on the water in this stretch is one of the trip's highlights.
Day 7: Aswan
The gentlest of Egypt's cities. The island temple of Philae, a felucca around the granite islands, and, if you can fit it, a Nubian village visit for colour and hospitality the rest of the country cannot match. Fly home from Aswan, or connect via Cairo. See the Aswan guide.
What you skip, and how to add it
A week leaves out Abu Simbel and the Red Sea. With two or three more days you can add both; see the 10-day itinerary. Short on time instead? The 5-day version trims this to the essentials. أسئلة شائعة
Is 7 days enough for Egypt?
Yes, a week is the classic first-timer length. It covers Cairo and Giza (including the Grand Egyptian Museum) plus the Nile between Luxor and Aswan, usually by cruise, without feeling rushed. Ten days lets you add Abu Simbel or the Red Sea.
What is the best 7-day Egypt itinerary?
Three nights in Cairo and Giza (pyramids, GEM, Islamic and Coptic Cairo), then a flight to Luxor and a 3 to 4 night Nile cruise to Aswan via Edfu and Kom Ombo. It's the most efficient loop through the icons.
Should I do a Nile cruise as part of a week in Egypt?
For most first-timers, yes. The Luxor, Aswan cruise reaches temples that are hard to visit otherwise (Edfu, Kom Ombo) and doubles as scenic transport, making a 7-day trip flow beautifully.
How much time should I spend in Cairo versus the Nile?
Roughly three days in Cairo and Giza, and three to four on the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. That split gives the pyramids and the GEM their due while leaving time for the river temples.
