Egypt's Western Desert

The White Desert, every question answered

The White Desert is a national park in Egypt's Western Desert, created in 2002, about 45 km north of Farafra Oasis and a drive of roughly four hours from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis, then by 4x4. It is famous for chalk rocks carved by the wind into mushrooms, spires and animal shapes that glow white, pink and gold at sunset. Most people visit on a two-day trip from Cairo with a night camping among the formations, between October and April.

Cairo to the park

What you pass on the way

From Cairo the desert highway runs southwest to Bahariya Oasis and its town, Bawiti. From there the 4x4s head south: the Black Desert, with hills capped by dark volcanic stones; Crystal Mountain, a ridge of quartz; the Agabat valley of dunes and white cliffs; then the New White Desert with its tall towers and the Old White Desert with the mushroom and chicken rocks. Farafra Oasis lies just south of the park.
