Trip length

How many days for the White Desert?

Two days and one night is the right length for most people: you leave Cairo in the morning, see the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain and Agabat on the way, camp in the White Desert at sunset and are back in Cairo the next afternoon. Three days and two nights is more relaxed and adds Ain Khadra, the Moon Cave and both the New and Old White Desert. A day trip is possible but means fourteen hours or more on the move and the formations in harsh midday light.

The classic

Two days and one night, hour by hour

  1. 1Day 1, morning. Pick-up in Cairo or Giza and about four hours on the desert highway to Bahariya Oasis. Lunch in Bawiti.
  2. 2Day 1, afternoon. Into the 4x4: the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain and the Agabat valley, then into the White Desert for sunset.
  3. 3Day 1, night. Camp among the chalk formations, dinner by the fire, the stars.
  4. 4Day 2, morning. Sunrise over the rocks, breakfast, a last walk, then the drive back via Bahariya.
  5. 5Day 2, afternoon. Back at your Cairo hotel in the afternoon or early evening.

The slower version

What a third day adds

With a second night the trip stops being a race. You can see the New White Desert with its tall limestone towers and the Old White Desert with the famous mushroom and chicken shapes, the palm-ringed spring of Ain Khadra, the wind-hollowed Moon Cave and a warm spring in Bahariya, and spend both sunsets in the desert. Some versions camp both nights; others spend one night in a Bahariya hotel. See the full itinerary on White Desert trips from Cairo.

If you must

Is the White Desert day trip worth it?

Only if your schedule has no room for a night. You leave Cairo before dawn, spend nine or ten hours in cars, see the formations in the flat light of midday and get back late at night. You miss what people come for: the sunset, the camp and the sky. If you have one spare day near Cairo, Fayoum or Saqqara and Dahshur may suit you better.

Planning

Fitting it into an Egypt itinerary

The trip starts and ends in Cairo, so it fits neatly before you fly or take the train to Luxor for a Nile cruise, or after you come back. Leave a buffer day before an international flight. For the season, see the best time to go; for prices, what it costs.

For most people, yes. Two days and one night covers the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain, Agabat, sunset, the camp and sunrise.

A slower pace and more places: Ain Khadra, the Moon Cave, both the New and Old White Desert, the springs of Bahariya and a second desert sunset.
How far is the White Desert from Cairo?
About four hours by road to Bahariya Oasis, then an hour or more by 4x4 through the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain into the park.
Can I combine the White Desert with a Nile cruise?
Easily. Do the desert from Cairo before or after the cruise, then fly or take the sleeper train to Luxor or Aswan.
