Choosing a base
For most travellers Bahariya is the better base: it is about four hours from Cairo, it has more places to stay and more experienced desert teams, and the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain lie on the way south. Farafra is closer to the White Desert itself, about 45 km from the park, but roughly 570 km from Cairo, so it suits longer trips, travellers going on to Dakhla and Kharga, or anyone who wants the formations with fewer people around.
The two oases
The quiet oasis
Qasr al-Farafra is a small farming town with palm gardens, a hot spring known as Bir Sitta, and a local artist's museum of desert scenes. It is the natural start for trips into the southern part of the park and onward along the loop through Dakhla and Kharga to Luxor. Note that Farafra town lies just outside the path of totality for the 2 August 2027 eclipse.
Our advice
Two days from Cairo: go via Bahariya, as almost everyone does. Three days or more: Bahariya still works and adds the oasis sights, but a night near Farafra lets you see the southern formations with almost nobody else. Going on to Dakhla, Kharga or Luxor: route through Farafra. See Bahariya Oasis and how many days to allow.
