Where to Eat at the Grand Egyptian Museum (2026)

By TiE Editors11 October 202610 min read

Where to eat inside the Grand Egyptian Museum: Zooba, Bittersweet, 30 North, Dolato and Sandough compared on location, spend, ticket rules and hours.

Quick answer: You can eat inside the Grand Egyptian Museum. Its official dining list includes 30 North (specialty coffee), Zooba (Egyptian street food), Bitter Sweet (pizza, pasta and brunch) and Dolato (gelato), plus Beano's Café, Ladurée, Mandarine Koueider and Starbucks, all inside the ticketed complex. Sandough, a flatbread sandwich bar, places itself at the GEM but is not on that list. Tickets are single entry, so eat before you leave.

Checked 11 October 2026 against the museum's own pages, the venues' own channels, Google Maps and Egyptian and trade press. Dollar figures are approximate, at about 52 EGP to the dollar.

Not listed means not published by the museum or the venue as of 11 October 2026. Spend ranges are what Google Maps users report per person, seen 11 October 2026. We found no GEM price list from the museum or any of the five; Dolato's figure comes from its chain-wide menu.

Can you eat at the GEM without a ticket?

No, not according to the museum. Its FAQ says an admission ticket is required to enter the GEM and enjoy all its offerings. The official ticket site sells two ticket types, admission and guided tour, so there is no dining-only ticket. Admission covers the galleries, Grand Hall, Grand Staircase, Khufu's Boats Museum, the commercial area and the exterior gardens, so every outlet on the museum's list is inside the ticketed complex.

Buy on the Grand Egyptian Museum's official ticketing website, where every ticket comes with a timed entry slot. We have not verified the current fare, so check it there.

30 North at the GEM: specialty coffee by the Grand Staircase

30 North is a specialty coffee brand with 11 cafés around Cairo (Sprudge, February 2026). Pick it if you want coffee rather than a full meal.

  • Where: overlooking the Grand Staircase. Sprudge reports the pyramids are visible from its patio seating.
  • Menu: espresso, pour-over and single-origin coffees, matcha (Scoop Empire, November 2025) and what SceneEats called comfort plates.
  • Spend: Google Maps users report EGP 200 to 400 per person (about $3.85 to $7.70).
  • Hours: the museum lists late opening to 10pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays but no daily hours, so plan on museum hours.

Zooba at the GEM: Egyptian street food in the Grand Hall

Visitors in the Grand Egyptian Museum's entrance hall beside two colossal royal statues

Zooba (styled Zööba) is a Cairo street-food chain founded in Zamalek in 2012. Zooba says it opened its GEM branch in 2023, before the museum's full opening; the museum says it serves a menu made only for GEM visitors. Pick it for an Egyptian meal without leaving the building.

  • Where: a corner unit on the Grand Hall overlooking the main entrance and the Grand Staircase, according to its designer, AE Superlab. Zooba says it sits right below the Ramesses II statue.
  • Food: Scoop Empire's November 2025 guide named ful, hawawshi (spiced meat baked in bread) and feteer (layered pastry). Our Egyptian food guide explains each dish.
  • Spend: Google Maps users report EGP 200 to 1,200 per person (about $3.85 to $23).
  • Hours: from 9am, and until 10pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays; the museum's page misprints the weekday closing time, so plan on museum hours.
  • Not confirmed: a pyramid view; no source mentions one.

Bitter Sweet (Bittersweet) at the GEM: a sit-down lunch

The museum spells it Bitter Sweet (Google Maps lists it as Bittersweet GEM) and calls it a home-grown Egyptian brand. Scoop Empire called it a sit-down option; pick it for lunch at a table.

  • Where: no source gives its unit, floor or view.
  • Food: Scoop Empire (November 2025) listed "BS" pocket pizzas, mana'eesh (Levantine flatbreads) and fresh homemade pasta; SceneEats the same week described brunch-style plates and desserts.
  • Spend: Google Maps users report EGP 400 to 1,200 per person (about $7.70 to $23).
  • Hours: 9am to 6pm, and until 10pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Dolato at the GEM: Italian-style gelato

Dolato is a Cairo gelato brand that the museum lists for its 100% Italian gelato; SceneEats called the GEM unit its newest branch in November 2025. Pick it for something cold.

  • Where: the museum does not list the unit. SceneEats suggested it for cooling off in the courtyard sun.
  • Menu: cones, cups, minis, gelato cakes and slushes, with gluten-free, vegan and no-added-sugar options on the chain menu.
  • Spend: Dolato's chain-wide menu (VAT included, undated, read 11 October 2026) lists a one-scoop cone at EGP 70 (about $1.35) and cups from EGP 125 to 399 (about $2.40 to $7.70). Google Maps shows no per-person range for this branch.
  • Hours: 9am to 6pm, and until 10pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
  • Not confirmed: whether the GEM branch charges chain prices.

Sandough at the GEM: flatbread sandwiches

Sandough is a sandwich bar built on house-baked flatbread. Its own Instagram gives its location as the Grand Egyptian Museum, but the museum's dining list did not include it on 11 October 2026. Pick it for a sandwich.

  • Where: its Google Maps listing places it in the museum garden, and its owner calls the spot the food court area.
  • Food: its posts feature a truffle steak sandwich (September 2026) and vegetarian options with tahini and falafel flavours (October 2026).
  • Spend: Google Maps users report EGP 400 to 600 per person (about $7.70 to $11.50).
  • Ticket: the museum's rule in the ticket section above applies; check at the gate.
  • Not confirmed: hours; the museum publishes none for it.

Other places to eat and drink inside the GEM

The rest of the museum's official list (checked 11 October 2026):

Press has also reported places that are not on the museum's list: Ratios, a bakery (Scoop Empire, November 2025); Almaz, a sandwich bar (SceneEats, June 2026); and Nahr, a Greek-Egyptian seafood restaurant that CairoScene said in May 2026 would open inside the museum in September. Social videos describe evenings at Nahr, but the museum has not listed it, so check before you plan around it.

When do the GEM cafés and restaurants open?

Most listed outlets open 9am to 6pm, and until 10pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Official hours, checked 11 October 2026:

Sun, Mon, Tue, Thu, FriWed and Sat
Museum complex8:30am to 7pm8:30am to 10pm
Galleries9am to 6pm9am to 9pm
Last entry and last ticket sale5pm8pm
Most food outlets9am to 6pm9am to 10pm

Your timed entry slot only sets when you walk in; there is no limit on how long you stay. Because most outlets close at 6pm on ordinary days, pick an earlier slot or come on a Wednesday or Saturday for an unhurried meal. Our Grand Egyptian Museum guide covers how long to allow for the Tutankhamun Galleries, getting there and access.

Can you leave the GEM to eat and come back?

No. Each ticket is single entry, so once you leave the premises you cannot return on the same ticket; eat first. The museum's other rules that affect a meal:

  • Outside food: not allowed, apart from small bottles of water.
  • Alcohol: prohibited anywhere on the premises.
  • Bags: may be searched. Anything over 40 x 40 cm goes into a free locker. Umbrellas must be left in designated areas, and tripods, selfie sticks and drones are not allowed.
  • Dress: the museum asks for appropriate attire; none of the five publishes a dress code.

Seeing the GEM and the Pyramids in one day

The GEM is about 2 km from the pyramids, with its own ticket; a plateau ticket does not get you in. Because there is no re-entry, decide where lunch happens: inside the museum before you leave, or on the plateau, covered in our guide to where to eat at the pyramids.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays you can also see the pyramids by day and the GEM in the evening, with last entry at 8pm. For the rest of the city, see where to eat in Cairo and GEM vs the Egyptian Museum.

Common questions

Does the Grand Egyptian Museum have a restaurant?

Yes, several. The museum's official dining list includes Zooba (Egyptian street food), Bitter Sweet (pizza, pasta and brunch), 30 North (specialty coffee), Dolato (gelato), Beano's Café, Ladurée, Mandarine Koueider and Starbucks, all inside the ticketed complex (checked 11 October 2026). Two fine-dining restaurants are listed as coming soon. Sandough, a sandwich bar not on the list, also places itself at the GEM.

Can you eat at the Grand Egyptian Museum without a ticket?

Not according to the museum. Its FAQ says an admission ticket is required to enter the GEM and enjoy all its offerings. The official ticket site sells two ticket types, admission and guided tour; there is no dining-only ticket. If you hear otherwise, check at the gate before you plan around it.

Can you leave the GEM for lunch and come back in?

No. Tickets are single entry, and you cannot re-enter once you leave the premises. There is, however, no time limit once you are inside, so the simplest plan is to eat at one of the museum's outlets before you exit.

How much does food cost at the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Google Maps users report typical spend per person of EGP 200 to 400 at 30 North (about $3.85 to $7.70), EGP 200 to 1,200 at Zooba (about $3.85 to $23), EGP 400 to 1,200 at Bitter Sweet (about $7.70 to $23) and EGP 400 to 600 at Sandough (about $7.70 to $11.50), seen 11 October 2026. Dolato's chain menu lists a one-scoop cone at EGP 70 (about $1.35). We found no official GEM menu with prices. Museum admission is a separate cost.

Can you bring your own food into the Grand Egyptian Museum?

No. The museum does not allow outside food or drink on the premises, apart from small bottles of water, and no food or drink is allowed in the galleries. Alcohol is prohibited everywhere on site.

Is there a rooftop restaurant with a pyramid view at the GEM?

Not on the museum's official dining list, which names no rooftop restaurant (checked 11 October 2026). Its two fine-dining restaurants overlooking the pyramids are listed as coming soon. Among the outlets open now, the only sourced pyramid view is from 30 North's patio seating, reported by Sprudge in February 2026.

Can you have dinner at the Grand Egyptian Museum?

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, yes: the complex stays open until 10pm, the galleries until 9pm, and most listed outlets serve until 10pm. Last entry on those days is 8pm. On other days the complex closes at 7pm and most listed outlets at 6pm. Alcohol is not allowed anywhere on site.

Do you need to book a table at the GEM restaurants?

We found no reservation system for ordinary visits at any of the five places in this guide, and none publishes a booking policy. What you do need to book in advance is your museum ticket, which is sold online with a timed entry slot.
