The Tutankhamun Galleries at the Grand Egyptian Museum: The Whole Collection, Together at Last

What's in the galleries

Howard Carter catalogued more than 5,000 objects when he opened the tomb in 1922 — and the GEM galleries are built to show the whole assemblage as a single story: the nested gilded shrines and coffins, the funerary treasures and jewellery, ceremonial thrones and chariots, weapons, and the everyday objects buried for the king's afterlife. Displayed together, they read less like a "greatest hits" and more like the complete burial it actually was.

Why "together for the first time" matters

Most visitors have only ever seen a fraction of Tutankhamun's treasures at once; a large share had never been publicly displayed at all. Bringing the full collection into purpose-built galleries — with the space, lighting and conservation the objects need — is the single biggest reason the GEM matters to anyone interested in ancient Egypt.

The Tutankhamun galleries are the highlight of a GEM visit and are reached via the Grand Staircase.
