When to Book Your Egypt Trip (2026): Flights, Cruises & Tickets

The single biggest booking decision for Egypt is the Nile cruise, and for peak-season travel you want it locked in three to six months ahead - the best ships and pyramid-view rooms sell out, and prices climb toward Christmas and New Year. Everything else is more forgiving. As a rule: book cruises and hotels first (3-6 months out for peak, 2-3 for shoulder), flights next (best fares usually land 2-4 months out), and timed tickets like the Grand Egyptian Museum last (a few days to a couple of weeks ahead). The Christmas-New-Year fortnight is the extreme case: five-star cruises and the famous pyramid-view hotels can book out six-plus months in advance, and holiday surcharges apply. Nile cruises: book these first

The Nile cruise is the trip's anchor and the thing most worth booking early, because supply is genuinely limited - a fixed number of ships sail Aswan-Luxor, and the good ones fill from the top down. For peak season, 3-6 months ahead gets you cabin choice (upper deck, better views), the itinerary you want (Aswan-to-Luxor vs the reverse, 3 vs 4 nights), and a fair price before holiday surcharges bite. Flights: the money-saving window

International flights to Cairo behave like most long-haul routes: fares are usually best two to four months before departure, and there's rarely an advantage to booking a year out. The exceptions are the peak holiday weeks - Christmas, New Year and Easter - where flights do climb early and booking 4-6 months ahead protects both price and availability. Set fare alerts, watch for airline sales, and be flexible by a day or two if you can; midweek departures usually beat weekends. Domestic flights (Cairo-Aswan, Cairo-Luxor, and the flight to Abu Simbel) are best booked once your ground itinerary is set - a few weeks to a couple of months out - since seats on the tourist routes and especially the short Abu Simbel hops are limited. Abu Simbel: book the day trip early

A day trip to Abu Simbel from Aswan is either a short flight or a long convoy drive, and both have limited capacity. If you're flying, book the seat as soon as your Aswan dates are confirmed - the flights are small and popular, and they sell out in peak season. If you're driving, your tour operator arranges it, but confirm your spot early during Dec-Feb. Either way, don't leave Abu Simbel to the last minute in high season; it's the trip most likely to be "sold out" on the day you want.

GEM and site tickets: book these last, but do book

The Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, fully open since its November 2025 grand opening, uses timed online tickets (~1,450 EGP adult). This is one to book once your Cairo dates are firm - a few days to a couple of weeks ahead is usually enough - but do book online rather than turning up, especially for weekend and holiday slots and popular late-morning entry times. Most other sites (the Pyramids, Karnak, Valley of the Kings) sell tickets at the gate and don't need advance booking, though special add-ons like entering a specific pyramid or a private after-hours visit should be arranged ahead through an operator.

If you want a clean sequence, do it in this order once you've chosen your dates:

1. Nile cruise / dahabiya - first, 3-6 months out for peak, 2-3 for shoulder. Locks the trip's spine.

3. International flights - 2-4 months out for value; 4-6 for holiday weeks.
