May is the start of Egypt's low season: hot and reliably dry, noticeably quieter than the spring peak, and — if you can handle the heat — one of the best-value windows of the year. The Red Sea is at its warm, calm best, Cairo and Giza are hot but very manageable if you start early, and Upper Egypt (Luxor and Aswan) gets genuinely fierce by mid-afternoon. May is dry across the whole country — rain is effectively zero everywhere except a stray shower in Alexandria. What changes is the intensity of the heat, and it changes a lot between the coast and the south.

Is May a good time to visit Egypt?

Yes — with one honest caveat about the south. Here's the balance:

In its favour: the tail end of the crowds have gone home, hotels and Nile cruises drop into low-season pricing, the Red Sea water is warm enough to swim and dive without a thick wetsuit, and the light is clean and dry for photography. You'll queue less at the Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum and the Valley of the Kings than you would in March.

Against it: Luxor and Aswan are hot enough by midday that temple-hopping from noon to 3pm is uncomfortable and, for some, unwise. This isn't a reason to skip Upper Egypt — it's a reason to be an early riser. The other consideration is simply personal heat tolerance; if you wilt above 32°C, weight your trip toward Cairo, Alexandria and the coast.

Crowds and prices in May

May sits at the front of Egypt's low season (roughly May to September), and the value shows up fastest in two places: Nile cruises and Red Sea resorts. Cabins and rooms that command a premium in the December–February peak are markedly cheaper, and you'll find more availability at short notice.

The GEM in particular is a natural midday refuge — cool, vast, and worth hours.

Luxor, Aswan and a Nile cruise — beautiful, but discipline required. A cruise is genuinely lovely in May: you sail in the breeze, the boats are quieter, and shore excursions are timed for early morning by design. Just accept the rhythm — temples at dawn, pool and shade at noon.

What to pack for Egypt in May

Think hot, dry and sun-exposed. Loose, light, long-sleeved cottons and linens beat shorts and vests — they keep the sun off and read better at mosques and churches, where covered shoulders and knees are expected. A wide-brim hat, real sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen are non-negotiable in Upper Egypt. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink more than you think you need.
