Egypt in April: Spring Warmth Before the Summer Heat (2026)

April is the door closing softly on Egypt's easy season. It's the last reliably comfortable month before the summer furnace arrives, so you get warm, generous days for touring, a Red Sea that has finally warmed up for swimming, and a genuinely Egyptian spring festival - Sham el-Nessim - that predates the pyramids. The trade-off is the khamsin, the hot desert wind that can blow a dusty day or two across the calendar. Time it right and April gives you the best of both worlds: winter-grade sightseeing weather with early-summer water, plus a spring festival calendar you won't find at any other time of year.

April weather: warm, dry and lengthening

April is when the mercury climbs but hasn't yet peaked. Cairo settles into pleasant high-20s afternoons, the coast is warm without being sticky, and Upper Egypt - Luxor and Aswan - starts to flex its summer muscle, regularly pushing into the mid-30s. It's still very manageable if you keep the usual dawn-and-dusk touring discipline in the south.

Crowds and prices: the end of high season

April is the tail end of Egypt's winter high season, which runs roughly December through March. Early April - especially around Western Easter and the spring-break window - can still be busy at the marquee sites and on Nile cruises, with prices holding near their peak. As the month goes on and the heat builds, the crowds thin and rates begin to soften ahead of the quiet summer.

The khamsin: Egypt's spring sand wind

April is peak season for the khamsin - a hot, dry, dust-laden wind that sweeps up from the Sahara, most common between March and May. Named from the Arabic for "fifty" (the rough span of days it can recur across), a khamsin can send temperatures spiking, drop visibility to a beige haze, and coat everything in fine grit for a day or two before it passes.

It's a nuisance, not a trip-wrecker. Most Aprils see only a handful of khamsin days, and they blow through quickly. Build a little slack into your itinerary, keep sunglasses and a scarf handy to protect eyes and airways, and treat a dusty day as a good excuse for an indoor museum morning. Spring events: Easter, Coptic Easter and Sham el-Nessim

April 2026 is unusually rich for spring celebrations, because the Western and Eastern Christian calendars line up close together this year.

• Western (Catholic/Protestant) Easter falls on 5 April 2026 - relevant mainly for European spring-break travel patterns and busier flights.
• Coptic Orthodox Easter falls on 12 April 2026. Egypt's Coptic Christians mark Holy Week and Easter with midnight liturgies and family feasting after a long fast; it's the biggest religious festival of the Coptic year.
• Sham el-Nessim falls on Monday 13 April 2026, the day after Coptic Easter. This is the one every Egyptian celebrates, regardless of religion - a national spring holiday with roots in ancient Egypt going back some 4,700 years. Families pour into parks and along the Nile for picnics built around feseekh (fermented mullet), salted fish, spring onions, lettuce and colored eggs.

Sham el-Nessim is a lovely day to be in Egypt if you want to see the country at play - but expect parks, gardens and green spaces to be packed, and some businesses to run on a holiday schedule. It's a public holiday, so plan transport and site visits accordingly.

What to do in Egypt in April

April's warmth opens up the whole menu, with the Red Sea moving to the front of it:

• Red Sea diving and snorkeling - the water has warmed to around 24°C, so Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and Marsa Alam are excellent, with warm air and strong visibility. This is the season's water sweet spot.
• Cairo and the Grand Egyptian Museum - still comfortable before the summer heat, and ideal on a dusty khamsin day.
• Nile cruises between Luxor and Aswan - warm days and mild evenings, best enjoyed with early starts in the hot south.
• Luxor's west bank at dawn - the Valley of the Kings and a sunrise hot-air balloon flight are far more pleasant before the midday heat.
• Alexandria and the Mediterranean coast - the coolest, breeziest option, and a fine base over the Sham el-Nessim holiday.

April vs March and May

April sits on a knife-edge between comfortable spring and the coming heat, so how it compares depends on which neighbor you weigh it against:

• Versus March: March is a touch cooler and squarely inside the comfortable season - see Egypt in March - but the Red Sea is still on the cool side. April trades a little more heat for noticeably warmer water and the spring-festival calendar.
• Versus May: May is hotter, particularly in Upper Egypt where afternoons push toward 40°C, and it edges into the shoulder before the summer lull covered in our Egypt in summer guide. April is the more comfortable choice for temple-heavy trips, while May rewards travelers who prioritize the beach and lower prices.

For most visitors, April is the better-balanced month: warm enough for the Red Sea, cool enough for the temples, and lively with spring festivals - as long as you keep an eye out for the khamsin.

April packing leans toward summer, with a nod to sun, dust and one cool evening layer:

• Light, breathable clothing for warm days - loose and covering works best for sun and site etiquette
• One light layer (shawl or fleece) for mild evenings and cruise decks
• Sun hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen - the sun is strong and climbing
• A scarf or buff to protect your face on a khamsin day
• Comfortable closed shoes for dusty sites
