Egypt in December: Weather, Crowds, Christmas & New Year (2026)

December is the single most popular month to visit Egypt, and the weather is why. Days are mild and reliably sunny - perfect for long hours at the pyramids, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings - while the summer furnace is a distant memory. The price you pay is exactly that: everyone else has the same idea, so December is peak season, and the Christmas-to-New-Year fortnight is the busiest, most expensive stretch of the entire year. Book early, pack layers, and it's a superb time to be here.

December weather: mild days, genuinely cold nights

The daytime is comfortable rather than hot. Expect Cairo highs around 20°C (68°F), and Upper Egypt - Luxor and Aswan - a touch warmer at 24-25°C (75-77°F). Skies are clear, the light is soft and good for photos, and you can walk a full temple site without wilting.

The surprise for first-timers is the night. Low desert humidity means the temperature crashes after sunset: Cairo and Luxor can drop to 6-9°C (43-48°F), and the open desert gets close to freezing. Nile cruise decks, Giza after dark and any desert excursion will feel cold. The Mediterranean north around Alexandria is milder but also the one region that gets real winter rain, so the odd wet, grey day is possible up there.

What this all adds up to is close to ideal touring weather: you can spend a whole day on your feet at Karnak or the Giza plateau without the summer's heat exhaustion, then wrap up warm for a Nile dinner cruise. Just don't be caught out by the swing - the difference between a 25°C Luxor afternoon and a 7°C dawn is bigger than most first-timers plan for.

Crowds: this is peak season

There's no soft-pedalling it - December is busy, and the last two weeks are the busiest days of the year at the headline sites. Expect queues at the Grand Egyptian Museum (fully open since November 2025, and drawing huge numbers), packed decks on Nile cruises, and the Valley of the Kings tombs shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-morning.

The fix is timing. Be at the gates when sites open - you'll get an hour of relative calm and better light before the tour buses arrive. Consider the less-trafficked alternatives: Dahshur instead of only Giza, Abydos and Dendera as a day trip from Luxor, the Nubian Museum in Aswan. Prices: the year's highest

December carries a clear premium, and the Christmas/New Year window is the sharpest of all. International flights, Nile cruises and Cairo and Red Sea hotels all peak, and the best cruises and boutique hotels sell out months ahead. If your dates touch 24 December to 2 January, treat everything as "book now."

Christmas and New Year in Egypt

Egypt is majority Muslim, so 25 December is a normal working day for most of the country - shops, sites and offices stay open. But Christmas is far from absent. The Coptic Orthodox community (a significant minority) celebrates Christmas on 7 January, which is an official public holiday; you'll see Coptic churches, especially in Cairo's Coptic quarter and in Coptic-majority areas, decorated and busy in early January.

International hotels, resorts and Nile cruises lean into 25 December and especially New Year's Eve with gala dinners, decorations and parties - the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada and Sharm go all-out for NYE, as do the five-star Cairo hotels. If a festive atmosphere with a poolside twist is the goal, the Red Sea is your spot. Note that gala nights are often compulsory add-ons to your room rate over the holidays, so read the fine print.

What to do in December

The weather makes December ideal for the things summer makes miserable:

• Full-day sightseeing in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan without heat exhaustion - this is the season for an ambitious 10-day Egypt itinerary.
• Nile cruises, which are at their most pleasant now - warm decks by day, but bring a jacket for evening sailing.
• Desert excursions to the White Desert or the Giza plateau, best in the cool daytime; camp only if you're ready for a cold night.
• Red Sea diving for those who don't mind slightly cooler water - visibility is excellent and the reefs are quieter.
• Hot-air ballooning over Luxor, which runs year-round at dawn and is especially crisp and clear in December.

Where to go in December

December's mild, dry weather suits the whole classic circuit, but a few pairings work especially well now:

• Cairo and Giza are at their most comfortable for the long museum-and-pyramids days that summer makes gruelling. Pair the Grand Egyptian Museum with the plateau.
• Luxor and Aswan deliver warm afternoons for temple-hopping and crisp, clear mornings - prime hot-air-balloon conditions.
• The Red Sea is your best bet for a festive New Year with sunshine, if slightly cooler water. Hurghada and Sharm resorts run big holiday programmes.
• The Western Desert (White Desert, oases) is in its comfortable season for daytime touring - just be ready for genuinely cold nights if you camp.
