Cairo to Luxor and Aswan 2026: Train, Flight or Bus
Fly, sleeper train, day train, Go Bus or a driver? Dated 2026 fares, timetables, the right Cairo station and how foreigners book the Abela sleeper.
Quick answer: Fly if your Egypt trip is under about ten days: EgyptAir listed 9 Cairo to Luxor departures on 17 October 2026, most about 1 hour 5 minutes in the air. Take the Abela sleeper train (the old Watania sleeper) if you want to save a hotel night and wake up in Luxor: from USD 131.25 per person sharing an Elite cabin, about 10.5 hours overnight. On a budget, Go Bus is the cheapest (from EGP 650, about $12.50, 9 hours); an ENR day train shows you the Nile valley in daylight. Going on to Aswan? Consider sailing that stretch.
Checked 17 October 2026 against operators' own booking systems where available; day-train times are indicative. Dollar figures for EGP prices are approximate, at about 52 EGP to the dollar.

The sleeper train: the old Watania, now run by Abela
Older pages still say Watania, but the Cairo to Luxor and Aswan sleeping cars are now run by Abela Trains; Egyptian National Railways' homepage links its "sleeping trains" button to Abela.
Abela sells two sleeping-car classes, Bed Standard and Bed Elite. Every compartment has two berths, a washbasin and air conditioning, and is lockable; dinner, breakfast and bedding are included. Elite is in cars refurbished during 2025 and 2026, with a power socket at each berth; Standard cars are older. Meals and service are the same.
2026 sleeper fares for foreigners
Foreigners pay in US dollars. Abela's own booking system showed these one-way fares per person on 17 October 2026, including a 5% bank fee:
| Travel date and train | Class | Sharing a 2-berth | Single occupancy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 Nov 2026, train 86 | Elite | USD 131.25 (about EGP 6,825) | USD 178.50 |
| 15 Nov 2026, train 82 | Standard | USD 115.50 | USD 157.50 |
| 28 Dec 2026, train 86 (peak) | Elite | USD 141.75 | USD 194.25 |
Cairo to Aswan costs the same. No Standard cabin came back for late December.
Prefer someone else to handle it? We list sleeper packages, such as a Cairo to Luxor full day guided tour with the overnight sleeper both ways from EGP 20,870 (about $401) and an East and West Banks tour with the sleeper both ways from EGP 23,538 (about $453), both checked 17 October 2026.
Sleeper timetable and which station
Southbound sleepers no longer leave from Ramses. They start at Upper Egypt station (Bashtil), opened in October 2024 about 7 km west of Ramses, and call at Giza 30 minutes later. Bashtil has no metro nearby, so take a taxi or Uber.
| Train | Runs | Upper Egypt (Bashtil) | Giza | Luxor | Aswan |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 86 | Daily | 19:45 | 20:15 | 06:10 | 09:25 |
| 82 | Daily | 21:10 | 21:40 | 07:50 | 11:10 |
| 1088 | Thu and Sun | 22:36 | 22:50 | 09:00 | 12:00 |
Abela confirmed trains 86 and 82 for 15 November 2026; check 1088 when you book. Delays of around two hours have been reported.
How to book the sleeper as a foreigner
- Book online or in the app. Choose "Foreigner" as your nationality and pay by card in US dollars.
- Pick the right station. Choose "Upper Egypt" or "Giza"; plain "Cairo" shows no sleepers.
- Two people sharing? Answer "Yes" to the "Family" question. Solo travellers share with someone of the same gender or pay the single fare. Abela's terms say Egyptian couples sharing a cabin may be asked for a marriage contract.
- Or buy in person at Abela's office at Ramses (outside the west facade, by Entry No. 1), at Upper Egypt (Bashtil) station itself, or at Giza, Luxor or Aswan stations.
- Book early. Sales open about four to five months ahead; Christmas, New Year and Easter sell out first.
Cancelling 48 hours or more ahead costs 25% of the fare, 24 hours ahead 50%, and no-shows get nothing; the bank fee is never refunded. Dates and names cannot be changed, and the name must match your passport.
Day trains: VIP express and Talgo

Egyptian National Railways (ENR) runs the seated trains. Its website and app sell only to Egyptian citizens, so check times there, then buy in person at the Arab and Foreign Reservation Office at Ramses station, upstairs on the mezzanine past the food court. You can pay in US dollars or euros, or by card with a 2.5% fee.
ENR says air-conditioned train tickets go on sale 15 days ahead. Its FAQ says you can get the full fare back if the train is cancelled or completely delayed, and 75% back if you cancel a reserved air-conditioned seat at least 48 hours ahead; ask at the window whether this applies to foreigner tickets.
| Train | Leaves | Arrives Luxor | Arrives Aswan |
|---|---|---|---|
| VIP 980 | Ramses 08:00, Upper Egypt 08:11, Giza 08:30 | 18:55 | 22:25 |
| VIP 2010 | Ramses 10:00 | 19:30 | 22:55 |
| Talgo 2030 (seats only, overnight) | Ramses 19:00 | about 03:40 | about 06:40 |
ENR publishes no foreigner fare, so confirm the price at the window.
Pick VIP 980 or 2010 to see the green strip of the Nile valley in daylight. The Talgo runs overnight in seats; if you travel at night anyway, the sleeper gives you a bed.
Should you fly or take the train to Luxor?
On 17 October 2026, EgyptAir's flight status page listed 9 Cairo to Luxor departures, from 05:50 to 00:30, four of them before 08:00, most taking 1 hour 5 minutes. The EGP 9,818 round trip (about $189, taxes included) on its offers page that day is an Egypt-market fare with limited seats. EgyptAir showed no Sphinx airport to Luxor flights, so plan on Cairo International. We could not confirm Air Cairo or Nile Air schedules.
Our verdict: fly on a short trip, take the sleeper for the experience and a saved hotel night.
Short on time? We list day trips to Luxor from Cairo, including a day trip to Luxor by plane (from EGP 21,969, about $422, checked 17 Oct 2026).
Buses: Go Bus to Luxor
Go Bus is the cheapest way south. For travel on 22 October 2026, its own booking site showed 10 departures from its Tahrir office to Luxor, from 00:20 to 23:30, with more from Giza, Nasr City and other offices at the same fares. Every trip is scheduled at 9 hours, arrival approximate.
| Go Bus class | One way (22 Oct 2026) | Round trip | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super Go D | EGP 650 (about $12.50) | EGP 1,170 | Air conditioning, TV |
| Business Class DD | EGP 1,000 (about $19) | EGP 1,620 | Adds food and drinks |
| Elite Business | EGP 1,000 (about $19) | EGP 1,710 | Adds food and drinks |
| Royal | EGP 1,000 to 1,500 (about $19 to $29) | EGP 1,800 to 2,700 (about $35 to $52) | Adds food and drinks |
Children over 6 need a full ticket. We could not confirm whether foreigners pay the same fare.
For Aswan, Go Bus is not an option: Luxor was the furthest south its network from Cairo reached on the date we checked. Other coach brands such as Blue Bus exist, but we could not confirm current Luxor or Aswan routes or fares from them.
Private driver
Cairo to Luxor is about 640 km by road, roughly 7.4 hours of driving before stops and checkpoints; Cairo to Aswan is about 850 km. A driver suits a family or small group who want to stop along the way, but plan it in daylight. The UK government's travel advice (updated 4 August 2026, still current when we checked on 17 October 2026) says not to drive outside main cities and resorts at night. It also advises against the desert road from Baris to Luxor, so stay on the Nile valley route. UK travel advice says UK drivers need a 1949 International Driving Permit alongside their licence; check your own country's rules.

Cairo to Aswan: what changes

Aswan is about 880 km from Cairo by rail.
- Flight: up to 7 scheduled EgyptAir departures on 17 October 2026 (one cancelled that day), about 1 hour 25 minutes, from EGP 10,166 round trip (about $195).
- Sleeper: trains 86 and 82 continue to Aswan for the Luxor fare.
- Day train: VIP 980 arrives at 22:25, about 14.5 hours.
A pattern that works well: fly Cairo to Aswan, sail or drive north to Luxor, then take sleeper train 87 back from Luxor at 20:35 and step off at Giza at 06:05. Our Aswan travel guide and Luxor travel guide cover what to do once you arrive.
Sail it instead: Luxor to Aswan by cruise or dahabiya

Seeing Cairo, Luxor and Aswan? You only need one long transfer: reach Luxor or Aswan by plane or sleeper, then let a boat carry you between them over 3 or 4 nights.
- Nile cruise ships: the classic choice. Our Nile cruise hub compares every ship by season, price and route. Bookable sailings start from EGP 28,642 (about $551) for a 3-night Aswan to Luxor cruise and EGP 31,641 (about $608) for a Luxor to Aswan cruise, checked 17 October 2026.
- Dahabiyas: small sailing boats with a handful of cabins, slower and quieter. See the dahabiya hub; a Luxor to Aswan dahabiya, 5 days and 4 nights, starts from EGP 104,612 (about $2,012), checked 17 October 2026.

How much is the sleeper train from Cairo to Luxor in 2026?
For foreigners, Abela's own booking system showed USD 131.25 per person sharing an Elite cabin and USD 178.50 for sole use, for travel on 15 November 2026. Standard was USD 115.50 sharing and USD 157.50 single. Peak dates cost more: 28 December 2026 was USD 141.75 sharing in Elite. Prices were checked on 17 October 2026, are one way, and include a 5% bank fee. Dinner and breakfast are included.
Can foreigners book train tickets in Egypt?
Yes, but how depends on the train. For the sleeper, book on Abela's website or app and choose 'Foreigner' as your nationality, or buy at Abela's office at Ramses, at Upper Egypt (Bashtil) station itself, or at Giza, Luxor or Aswan stations. For ENR day trains, the online system sells only to Egyptian citizens, so buy at the Arab and Foreign Reservation Office upstairs at Ramses station, paying in US dollars, euros or by card (2.5% fee).
Which Cairo station does the sleeper train to Luxor leave from?
Southbound sleepers start at the Upper Egypt station (Bashtil), about 7 km west of Ramses, and stop at Giza about 30 minutes later. They do not start at Ramses. Day trains still leave from Ramses and also stop at Upper Egypt station and Giza. Bashtil has no metro nearby, so take a taxi or Uber.
How do I get from Cairo to Aswan?
The fastest way is to fly: EgyptAir listed up to 7 scheduled departures on 17 October 2026 (one cancelled that day), about 1 hour 25 minutes in the air. The sleeper train takes about 13.5 to 14 hours overnight and costs the same as to Luxor (USD 131.25 sharing in Elite). The VIP day train takes about 14.5 hours. Go Bus did not show any Cairo to Aswan service.
Is Luxor near Cairo?
Not really. Luxor is about 640 km from Cairo by road (around 7.4 hours of pure driving) and 671 km by rail. The flight is about 1 hour 5 minutes, the sleeper about 10.5 hours and Go Bus about 9 hours scheduled.
Should I fly or take the train from Cairo to Luxor?
Fly if your trip is short, roughly under ten days, because you keep a full day for sightseeing. Take the sleeper if you want the experience and to save a hotel night. Take the VIP day train if you want to see the Nile valley in daylight and are not in a hurry.
How many days do you need for Cairo and Luxor?
Give Cairo 2 to 3 days and Luxor at least 2 full days, one for the East Bank and one for the West Bank. Then add your transfer: the sleeper moves you overnight, so you lose no sightseeing time; a flight is about 1 hour 5 minutes in the air but uses part of a day with transfers; a day train or Go Bus uses a whole day. Our Luxor travel guide covers what to see once you arrive.
Is it safe to drive from Cairo to Luxor at night?
UK government travel advice (updated 4 August 2026, still current when we checked on 17 October 2026) says not to drive outside main cities and resorts at night. If you hire a driver, plan the trip in daylight and stay on the Nile valley road; the desert road from Baris to Luxor is in an area the same advice warns against.
