Overview

After the day-trippers have gone, Karnak takes on a different character, and the evening Sound and Light show is the way to see it. You enter the vast temple complex of Amun after dark, and as coloured light washes across the pylons, obelisks and the forest of giant columns in the Great Hypostyle Hall, a narration voiced by the temple, the pharaohs and the priests carries you through the story of Thebes at the height of its power. The show is a walking one: you move through the site in stages, the illumination revealing carved walls and colossal statues you would walk straight past in daylight, before the finale at the Sacred Lake, where you take a seat in the grandstand and watch the temple mirrored in the still water under the stars. It lasts around an hour, the narration runs in a rotation of languages through the week, and the cool night air makes it a welcome contrast to the daytime heat. Your transfer to and from your Luxor hotel and the show ticket are arranged in advance, so the evening is as simple as arriving at the gate. Bring a light layer for the open-air seating.
