Quad Biking in Egypt: Where to Ride & What to Expect

Quad biking is the easiest way to swap the beach for the open desert for an afternoon. You climb onto an automatic ATV, follow a guide in convoy across the flats behind the coast or the dunes near the pyramids, and stop at a Bedouin camp for tea before riding back — usually into a sunset. Where to go quad biking in Egypt

• Dahab — laid-back Sinai alternative to Sharm, with short desert-and-canyon runs that pair well with a day of snorkelling or diving.

Safety and who can ride

Quad biking is beginner-friendly but it is still a motorised vehicle on loose ground, and standards vary between operators.

• Age: you generally need to be 16 to drive your own quad. Younger children (typically 5–15) can usually ride as passengers on a double quad with an adult. Very young kids are better off skipping it.
• Wear the helmet the whole ride, keep your line behind the guide, and don't race or overtake — most incidents come from riders pushing the speed on unfamiliar terrain.
• Check your travel insurance. Many standard policies exclude quad biking or ATV use, or require an add-on. Confirm you're covered before you ride.

Go at sunset or early morning, and favour the cooler months. From October to April the desert is comfortable; May to September it's genuinely hot, so a dawn or dusk slot is far more pleasant than midday. The one thing everyone underestimates is dust. In convoy you eat the dust of the quads ahead, so cover up.

• Closed shoes (no sandals or flip-flops) and clothes you don't mind getting filthy.
• Sunscreen, a hat for the camp stops, and water.
• A light layer for evening trips — the desert cools fast after sunset.
• Keep your phone or camera in a zipped pocket; sand gets everywhere.

Is it worth it?
