GEM vs the Egyptian Museum: Which Should You Visit? (2026)
Cairo now has two great antiquities museums. Here is how the new Grand Egyptian Museum and the historic Egyptian Museum on Tahrir actually differ, and why most visitors should see both.
Since the Grand Egyptian Museum opened in full in late 2025, Cairo has had two world-class antiquities museums, and travellers keep asking which one to choose. The honest answer is to see both if you can, because they offer genuinely different experiences, and they are not in competition so much as in conversation. Here is how they compare, and how to fit them into a trip. See both on the interactive map.
The Grand Egyptian Museum, at Giza
The new flagship is vast, modern and purpose-built on the Giza plateau, within sight of the pyramids. It holds Tutankhamun's complete tomb collection together for the first time, all 5,000-plus objects, across two dedicated galleries, alongside twelve thematic halls tracing Egyptian history, the Grand Staircase lined with around sixty colossal statues, the relocated Khufu solar boat, and the showpiece: a wall of glass that frames the Pyramids of Giza at the top of the climb. This is the place to see the Tutankhamun treasure and to experience antiquities displayed at their absolute best, with space, light and modern interpretation. Plan half a day at least; see the full GEM guide.
The Egyptian Museum, on Tahrir
The historic museum on Tahrir Square has been open since 1902, and it is a completely different creature: a dense, old-fashioned treasure house packed floor to ceiling, with handwritten labels, creaking wooden cases and a faded grandeur the new museum cannot replicate. Even as its star pieces move to the GEM, it stays deeply rewarding. The Royal Mummies here, in a dedicated climate-controlled hall, remain a moving, quietly extraordinary highlight, and there is a romance to the building's century of accumulated dust that the gleaming GEM, for all its brilliance, lacks.
How they differ at a glance
The GEM is vast, modern and curated, sits beside the pyramids, and is built around the complete Tutankhamun collection and a grand architectural experience. The Tahrir museum is dense, historic and atmospheric, sits in the centre of the city near Islamic Cairo, and is best for old-world charm, the Royal Mummies, and the sheer overwhelming quantity of artefacts.
Which to choose, and how to pair them
If you only have time for one, make it the GEM: it is the headline, with the Tutankhamun treasure and the pyramid setting. If you have a spare half-day, add the Tahrir museum for a completely different feel. The smart pairing is the GEM with the pyramids on a Giza day, when you are already on that side of the city, and the Tahrir museum with Islamic or Coptic Cairo on another, since they are close together downtown. See the Cairo travel guide for how it all fits, and the Egypt Travel Guide 2026 for the bigger picture.
أسئلة شائعة
Should I visit the GEM or the Egyptian Museum in Cairo?
See both if you can, since they are different experiences. The Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza is the modern flagship with Tutankhamun's complete collection and pyramid views; the historic Egyptian Museum on Tahrir is a dense, atmospheric treasure house with the Royal Mummies. If you must choose one, pick the GEM.
Is the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir still worth visiting?
Yes. Even as its star pieces move to the GEM, the Tahrir museum stays rewarding for its old-world charm, sheer density of artefacts and the Royal Mummies, a very different feel from the modern Grand Egyptian Museum.
Where is Tutankhamun's treasure now?
Tutankhamun's complete tomb collection is now displayed together at the Grand Egyptian Museum on the Giza plateau, which opened in full in late 2025, the first time all of it has been shown in one place.
Can you visit both Cairo museums in one trip?
Easily. Pair the GEM with the pyramids on a Giza day, and the Tahrir Egyptian Museum with Islamic or Coptic Cairo on another. Together they bracket a great Cairo visit.
