Overview

Aswan sits about 85 metres above sea level on the eastern bank of the Nile at the first waterfall. The governorate covers 34,608 km2 and lies some 879 km from Cairo. In this experience you will get an overview of Aswan’s landscape and its place within Nubia, the civilised region that has long been Egypt’s southern gate. You will learn about the wider Aswan Governorate and the important places it contains, including Abu Simbel, Lake Nasser and the Nubian “displacement” villages. Along the way you will hear about the city’s riverside location and its historical role on the Nile. You will also learn how Aswan connects to Cairo and beyond by rail, by desert and agricultural roads, by Nile boats and by domestic flights, which helps explain its significance as a transport hub and cultural crossroads.
