Overview
A dahabiya is how the Nile was travelled before the age of the big floating hotels — a slim, twin-masted sailing boat with only a handful of cabins, moving with the wind and the current rather than a roaring engine. On this four-to-five-day sail between Luxor and Aswan you share the boat with a dozen guests at most, mooring each night against quiet islands and sandbanks the larger cruisers simply cannot reach. The pace is unhurried and the monuments arrive one by one. Above Luxor you cross to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings, the terraced mortuary temple of Hatshepsut and the towering Colossi of Memnon. Sailing south you stop at Esna, at the beautifully preserved Temple of Horus at Edfu — the most complete temple in Egypt — and at the double sanctuary of Kom Ombo, shared between the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus. In between there is nothing to do but watch the riverbanks slide past: palm groves, egrets, and farmers working the fields as they have for millennia. At Aswan you visit the island Temple of Philae and the High Dam. Full board, a resident Egyptologist and all transfers are included, so the river sets the rhythm and you simply sail.
