Overview

Board a full-board cruise ship in Aswan and sail slowly downriver to Luxor over three unhurried days, tracing the same green ribbon of the Nile the pharaohs did. The rhythm is gentle: mornings ashore among the temples, afternoons on deck watching feluccas, palm groves and mudbrick villages slide past. From Aswan you head north to Kom Ombo, the unusual double temple shared between Sobek the crocodile god and Horus the falcon, standing right at the water's edge. Next comes Edfu, the vast and remarkably complete Temple of Horus, reached by horse-drawn carriage from the mooring. The final stretch brings you to Luxor and ancient Thebes, where the Karnak temple complex and the royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings wait across the river on the West Bank, beneath the terraces of Hatshepsut's temple and the seated Colossi of Memnon. Cabins are comfortable with river views, meals are included on board, and a resident Egyptologist accompanies each site visit to bring the carvings and cartouches to life. It is the classic way to see Upper Egypt's greatest monuments without the daily packing and long road transfers — the sights come to you as the river carries you north.
