You begin at the Grand Egyptian Museum out by the Giza plateau, the enormous new home for the country's antiquities, entering past the towering statue of Ramesses II and climbing the grand staircase lined with royal figures toward the galleries that now hold the complete Tutankhamun collection under one roof. As the light goes, you transfer to the river for a Nile dinner cruise: a slow loop past the lit-up bridges and waterfront while an open buffet of Egyptian and international dishes is served. On board there is live entertainment – a belly dancer and a whirling tanoura performer spinning in coloured, illuminated skirts, the folk show that traditionally closes a Cairo night out.
