Cairo Food Tour — Street Eats & 40 Tastings

This is a walking food crawl through the busy streets of downtown Cairo, led by a local guide who knows which stalls and hole-in-the-wall spots are worth stopping for. Over three to four hours you graze your way through more than forty small tastings, so you leave full without ever sitting down to one big meal. You start with koshary, Egypt's beloved bowl of rice, lentils, pasta, fried onions and spicy tomato sauce, at one of the city's most famous counters. From there the route weaves past taameya, the Egyptian fava-bean falafel eaten hot from the pan, and feteer meshaltet, the flaky layered pastry sold sweet or savoury. Braver eaters try sizzling Alexandria-style liver and sausage sandwiches, and everyone stops for hawawshi, spiced minced meat baked inside crisp bread. You finish with the sweets Cairo does so well, basbousa, konafa and creamy om ali, and a glass of mint tea in an old coffeehouse where the city slows down for a moment. Along the way your guide explains what you are eating, how it is made and where each dish sits in Egyptian life. The tour starts and ends in downtown Cairo, on foot, so you also get a feel for the neighbourhood between bites.
