The luxury end of the Nile fleet is a small group of five-star ships, most refurbished within the last few years, running the same Luxor to Aswan temple route as everything else. What you pay more for is space, service and food, not a different itinerary. Cabins run from around 16 on the most exclusive boats to nearly 80 on the largest, and the shortest sailings are three or four nights.

What actually makes a Nile cruise luxury?
Four things, and none of them is the route. Cabin size and whether it has a genuine balcony rather than a French one. Crew-to-guest ratio, which is what you feel at dinner and at the pool. Whether an Egyptologist travels with the boat or is met at each site. And how recently the ship was refurbished, because a five-star rating awarded a decade ago does not survive a decade of river water. The boats on this page were all refurbished recently, the most recent in 2024.
Is a luxury ship worth it over a mid-market one?
If your time on board matters as much as your time ashore, yes. The temples are identical on every boat, and a mid-market ship visits them on the same schedule. What changes is the eleven or twelve hours a day you spend sailing, eating and sleeping. On a five-star boat that time is genuinely pleasant; on a tired three-star boat it is somewhere to wait. If you are ashore from dawn and asleep by nine, the difference is smaller than the price gap suggests.
How many nights should a luxury cruise be?
Three or four nights covers the classic route and all the major temples. Seven nights covers the same ground more slowly, usually as a round trip, with time to sit still. The longer 12 and 14-night sailings on this page add Dendera and Abydos, which most short itineraries skip and which are among the best-preserved temples in Egypt.
What should I check before booking?
Which deck your cabin is on, because the lowest deck has small windows near the waterline. Whether entry tickets to the temples are included or charged ashore, which is where most budget surprises come from. Whether drinks are included, and which ones. And whether the boat sails the Esna lock at a civilised hour, since some schedules put the transit in the middle of the night.

- The small five-star ships and the top dahabiyas compete for this, and the honest answer depends on what you want. A five-star ship gives you a pool, a spa and a proper restaurant. A dahabiya gives you eight to twenty-four fellow guests, moorings the big ships cannot reach, and sailing under canvas. Neither is objectively more luxurious.
- Do luxury Nile cruises include the temple tickets?
- Some do and some do not, and it is the single most common source of unexpected cost. Entry tickets across a four-night itinerary add up meaningfully per person. Always confirm in writing which sites are included before you book.
- How far in advance should I book a luxury Nile cruise?
- The five-star boats have the fewest cabins and the highest repeat-guest rate, so the good cabins on the good dates go first. For the October to April high season, several months ahead is normal. Summer sailings are far easier to get at short notice.
