Overview

You’ll explore two of ancient Egypt’s most evocative temple complexes: Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple. Luxor Temple was begun by Amunhotep III in the 18th Dynasty and completed by Ramesses II during the 19th Dynasty. It was dedicated to the great god Amun‑Ra, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu, who together represent the Theban triad. As you move through the site, you’ll see the Obelisk of Ramesses II standing in front of the 1st Pylon and gain a sense of the temple’s layered history and religious purpose. Karnak Temple offers a broader view of ancient worship. Described as the greatest example of worship in history, it was dedicated to the god Amon, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu. The complex was constructed over an extended span, from the beginning of the Middle Kingdom through to the Graeco‑Roman Kingdom, so you’ll notice changes that reflect many periods of Egyptian building and devotion. Along the way, you’ll learn about the temples’ dedications and see how successive rulers added to these sacred spaces.
