Overview

You will explore Garbage City, a slum settlement at the base of Mokattam Hill on the outskirts of Cairo that is inhabited by Coptic Christians. Within this area, seven churches and chapels are hidden inside a series of caves. As you move through the neighbourhood, you will see these cave churches and get a sense of how religious life is woven into the local streets. While walking the chaotic streets of Garbage City, you will visit St Simone, also known as the cave church, and admire recently made sculptures that describe the Holy Family’s journey to Egypt. Along the way, you will also explore the nearby City of the Dead, an area where the deceased take up residency among the living, offering a striking contrast in how communities use space and memory.
