Overview

There is no better way to end a day in Luxor than under the sail of a felucca, the lateen-rigged wooden boat that has worked the Nile for centuries. This late-afternoon trip casts off from the Luxor corniche and catches the breeze upriver toward Banana Island, a small palm-covered islet a short sail south of the city. The pace is slow and quiet, just the water, the sail and the green riverbanks slipping by, with the West Bank hills turning gold behind you. At Banana Island you step ashore to wander among the banana and date palms of the little plantation, where you can taste fresh fruit in season and see the birds and animals kept on site. Sailing back, the timing is everything: the sun sinks over the Theban hills and the river lights up in copper and rose, the classic Luxor sunset seen from the water. Tea is served on board as you drift home. It is a calm, romantic couple of hours that makes a perfect counterpoint to the temples and tombs, and it suits families and couples alike. Bring a light layer for the cooler air on the water and a camera for the sunset. Hotel transfers can be arranged.
