Overview

After the crowds have gone and the desert cools, the Giza Plateau puts on a show. From reserved seating facing the floodlit monuments, you watch the Great Sphinx narrate the story of ancient Egypt — the rise of the pharaohs, the building of the pyramids and the mysteries buried beneath them — as coloured light sweeps across the three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and a soundtrack rolls out over the sand. Lasers pick the stone out of the dark, and for a little under an hour the 4,500-year-old structures become a vast open-air screen. It is unashamedly theatrical, and seeing the pyramids lit against a black desert sky is a genuinely different experience from the daytime plateau — cooler, quieter and oddly moving. The commentary runs in a range of languages depending on the evening's schedule. With this booking your seat is reserved and hotel pickup and drop-off are arranged, so you skip the ticket queue and the hassle of getting out to Giza after dark. It pairs naturally with an early dinner nearby and makes an easy, atmospheric evening for anyone who has already seen the pyramids by day — or a dramatic first encounter for those who haven't.
