Luxor to Abu Simbel - Private Tour Nubian Monuments of Abu Simbel

Overview

You’ll travel south past local villages towards Aswan and the monumental temples at Abu Simbel. These Nubian monuments were carved about 3,000 years ago for Ramses II and his queen Nefertari. As you move through the site, you’ll see the Great Temple’s façade, which measures about 35 m high and 30 m long, and explore walls covered in scenes of Ramses’s victory at the Battle of Kadesh. The Smaller Temple is dedicated to Nefertari, who is portrayed there in the forms of the goddesses Isis and Hathor. From 1964–68, UNESCO undertook a massive engineering project to protect both temples from flooding. The structures were dismantled, raised about 60 m up the cliff from their original position, and carefully reassembled on a nearby plateau. After you’ve taken in the architecture and history, you’ll have lunch and then be brought back to your Luxor hotel.
