Overview

There is no better way to grasp the scale of ancient Thebes than to float above it at dawn. Long before sunrise, you are collected from your hotel and taken by short boat and road to the launch field on the West Bank, where the balloons are laid out and the burners roar to life in the half-light. As the sun lifts over the eastern horizon, you rise gently into a calm morning sky and the whole necropolis opens beneath you: the honeycomb valleys and ridges hiding the royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut tucked against its cliff, the two Colossi of Memnon standing on the plain, and the silver thread of the Nile dividing the green fields from the desert. The flight lasts roughly 30 to 45 minutes, drifting silently except for the burner, giving you time to take in the patchwork of sugarcane and villages waking below. Your pilot points out the landmarks and handles a smooth landing, after which you receive a flight certificate to mark the morning.
