A guide leads you out across the open sand to the high dunes behind the monuments, where all three pyramids and, on a clear morning, the Sphinx line up against the horizon. At sunrise the stone glows pink as Cairo wakes; at sunset it burns gold and the sky behind the pyramids turns to fire.
