Overview

North of Dahab, past the famous Blue Hole, the coast road runs out and the only way onward is by camel or by boat. That is exactly what makes Ras Abu Galum special: a protected stretch of Sinai shoreline where the mountains fall straight into the sea and a scatter of Bedouin huts is the only sign of settlement. This full-day trip starts with a transfer to the trailhead near the Blue Hole, where you meet your camel and its Bedouin handler for an unhurried ride along the water's edge. The reef here drops away just metres from shore, so the snorkelling is immediate and vivid, with hard corals, anthias and the occasional turtle in gin-clear water. At the Blue Lagoon, a wide turquoise shallows framed by desert, there is time to swim, float and simply do nothing before a simple Bedouin lunch of grilled fish, rice and salads served in the shade. You will ride or walk back along the same coastal path in the softer afternoon light. Bring a swimsuit, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen; water shoes help on the rocky entries. It is an easy, low-key day that trades crowds for one of the Red Sea's last genuinely quiet corners.
