Far out in the Western Desert, almost on the Libyan border, Siwa is Egypt's most remote and magical oasis — a world of date palms, salt lakes and its own Amazigh (Berber) culture, reached on this three-day journey from Cairo. The long drive west via the Mediterranean coast is part of the adventure, delivering you into a landscape utterly unlike the Nile Valley. In Siwa town you climb the melting mudbrick maze of the Shali Fortress and visit the Oracle Temple of Amun, where Alexander the Great is said to have come to consult the oracle and be named a son of the gods. You float effortlessly in the mineral-heavy salt lakes, so buoyant you cannot sink, and swim in the palm-shaded pool of Cleopatra's Spring. From the Mountain of the Dead's rock-cut tombs you look out over the whole green basin. The highlight for many is a 4x4 safari into the Great Sand Sea, plunging over towering dunes to reach a freshwater hot spring and a sunset that sets the whole desert ablaze. Nights are spent in Siwa's mudbrick eco-lodges under brilliant stars. With transfers, guiding and the desert safari arranged, it is an immersive escape into one of the last truly off-the-map corners of Egypt.

   Day 1 — Cairo to Siwa

   Depart Cairo and drive west via the Mediterranean coast to Siwa, arriving in the afternoon. Explore the mudbrick ruins of the Shali Fortress and settle into your oasis lodge.

   Day 2 — Oracle Temple & springs

   Visit the Oracle Temple of Amun and the rock-cut tombs of the Mountain of the Dead, then cool off in the palm-shaded pool of Cleopatra's Spring.

   Day 2 — Great Sand Sea safari

   Head out on a 4x4 safari into the Great Sand Sea for dune-bashing, a freshwater hot spring and sunset over the towering dunes.

   Day 3 — Salt lakes & return

   Float in Siwa's mineral salt lakes in the morning, then begin the long drive back across the desert to Cairo.
