   Morning pickup from your Cairo hotel and a drive of under two hours to the Fayoum depression and its desert lakes.

   Wadi El Rayan waterfalls

   Stop at the falls that link the upper and lower lakes — the only waterfalls in Egypt — with views over the water and dunes from the escarpment above.

   Magic Lake & Gebel Mudawara

   Continue to the Magic Lake, named for its shifting colours, and the wind-sculpted hill of Mudawara, with time for photos or a swim.

   Visit the village of Tunis on the ridge above Lake Qarun, known for its studios of hand-thrown, glazed ceramics.

   Return to Cairo
