Egypt Tours from South Africa

Egypt is one of the easier long-haul trips South Africans can make: EgyptAir flies direct from Johannesburg to Cairo in about eight hours, the rand tends to convert favourably against the Egyptian pound, and the country is actively marketed to the South African traveller with dedicated Cairo-plus-cruise programmes. The one thing to nail down early is the visa, where sources genuinely conflict, so confirm your path before you book. Here is how to plan the trip.

Flights from Johannesburg

EgyptAir operates a direct Johannesburg (JNB) to Cairo (CAI) route, a nonstop of roughly 8h20m over about 3,915 miles, reported four to five days a week (verify the current frequency). That is the primary single-carrier option. If it does not suit your dates, one-stop routings run via the Gulf hubs (Emirates via Dubai, Qatar via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi) and via Addis Ababa on Ethiopian or Nairobi on Kenya Airways. Cape Town and Durban travellers generally connect through Johannesburg or a Gulf or African hub, adding a leg.

Economy round-trips on JNB-CAI show indicatively from around GBP 314, roughly ZAR 7,000 to 12,000-plus depending on season and carrier. The rand conversion is approximate, so verify live fares when you book.

Visa for South African passport holders (verify first)

Requirements are reported inconsistently, so confirm with an Egyptian consulate before travel. Two paths appear across sources: a single-entry tourist visa on arrival for stays up to 30 days, and an online e-Visa via the official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg. One 2026 guide says South Africans need an e-Visa or visa on arrival at around USD 25 with processing of three to five business days; another claims South African passport holders are not currently eligible for the e-Visa system and must obtain a visa before travel. That contradiction is real and must be resolved with the official portal or embassy rather than a travel blog.

Separately, from 1 August 2026 Cairo airport is piloting a digital visa on arrival: a QR-code option costing USD 36, valid 48 hours from issuance, obtainable pre-departure, in-flight or on arrival via the portal, app or a kiosk, running alongside the paper VOA during the pilot. South African eligibility for this digital route is unverified. Whichever path applies, your passport should have at least six months validity beyond your stay.

Egypt is marketed hard to South Africa, with dedicated "Egypt tours from South Africa" programmes offering private guided trips and luxury Nile cruises. The core product pairs Cairo (Giza pyramids, Sphinx, Egyptian Museum) with a Luxor-Aswan Nile cruise covering Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel, with optional Red Sea beach extensions at Hurghada or Sharm. Indicative land bands, excluding international air, run from about USD 550 for a 4-day/3-night Aswan-to-Luxor cruise, about USD 670 for 5-day/4-night, and around USD 1,009 for a roughly 9-day Cairo plus sleeper-train plus cruise budget trip; premium river brands such as Viking and AmaWaterways sell at a higher tier. Best time to travel

Prime season is October to April, mild at roughly 20-28C, with February-March and October-November the sweet spots for good weather and fewer December crowds. June to August is hottest, with Luxor and Aswan at 40-43C, and cheapest; December to February is peak and priciest; March-April can bring khamsin dust winds. The South African summer break, roughly late November to mid-January, aligns with Egypt's pleasant peak season but higher prices, while the June-July school break coincides with Egypt's hottest, cheapest window.

Money and health

Egypt uses the Egyptian pound, and the rand is reported to convert favourably (check the current ZAR-EGP rate before you go). Carry some USD for visa or VOA fees and tips, use ATMs and banks over airport counters for better rates, and keep cash for markets, taxis and baksheesh while cards cover hotels and larger venues. No vaccines are legally mandatory for most travellers, but Hepatitis A and typhoid are the most recommended; keep routine vaccines current. A yellow-fever certificate may be required if you arrive from or transit a yellow-fever-risk country, which is relevant if you route via certain sub-Saharan hubs, so confirm for your exact itinerary and see a travel clinic four to six weeks before the trip.
