For Omani travellers, Egypt is about as low-friction as a foreign trip gets: a direct hop of a little over four hours to Cairo, visa-free entry as a GCC citizen, and a spread of options from pyramids and Nile cruises to Red Sea beaches and a natural pairing with Jordan. This page covers the flights, the entry rules for nationals and residents, and the trips worth booking.
Getting there: flights from Oman
Direct Muscat (MCT) to Cairo (CAI) flying time averages about 4 hours 18 minutes. Oman Air, EgyptAir and Air Arabia (Air Arabia Egypt) all run nonstop service, with Oman Air operating roughly 13 nonstop flights a week and EgyptAir around 5. Round-trip fares typically run about USD 322 to 599 depending on season and lead time, with deals reported from around USD 191 to 197 round-trip; in local terms, one-way deals have been advertised from about OMR 76. Convert and verify at booking.
The Red Sea airports — Hurghada (HRG) and Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) — are reached from the Gulf mainly via seasonal, charter, or one-stop connections rather than dense nonstops; scheduled direct service from Muscat concentrates on Cairo. Confirm current HRG and SSH nonstop schedules with the airlines.
Visas: nationals versus residents
Entry rules split two ways, so confirm which applies to you before booking.
Omani nationals, as GCC citizens, are visa-exempt for Egypt for up to six months (alongside Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE). Because entry is visa-exempt, you need no e-visa or visa-on-arrival fee — just a passport valid six months or more and onward or return documentation.
Expat GCC residents (non-GCC nationals holding valid Gulf residency) are eligible for a visa on arrival at Egyptian airports and land borders if both the residence permit and passport are valid six months or more, with a cash fee reported around USD 25. Eligibility is most straightforward for professional categories (managers, engineers, doctors, business owners); labor and domestic-helper professions may need a pre-approved consular visa, so those travellers should confirm with the Egyptian embassy before booking.
The new digital visa on arrival
From 1 August 2026, Cairo International Airport began a digital visa-on-arrival pilot: eligible travellers generate a QR-code visa before or after landing via an official portal, mobile app, or airport kiosks. Reported total cost is USD 36 (a USD 30 visa fee plus USD 6 issuance), with each QR code expiring 48 hours after generation — verify during the pilot. This mainly matters to Oman-based expat GCC residents who use the VOA, not to visa-exempt Omani nationals, and paper stickers reportedly remain available for now.
What to book
A natural twin-centre from Oman is Egypt plus Jordan — pyramids and Petra — widely packaged by operators such as Egypt Tours Portal, Memphis Tours, G Adventures and Tauck. Multi-country Egypt and Jordan itineraries of 7 to 15 days are priced from roughly USD 3,299 up to USD 3,900 or more for longer holy-land variants; shorter Cairo-and-Petra combos come cheaper. Egypt-only staples include Cairo city breaks, 3–4 night Nile cruises between Luxor and Aswan, and Red Sea beach or dive packages to Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh (pricing varies — quote per operator). For the river leg, our Nile cruise guide covers the Luxor–Aswan route in detail.
Best time to go
The peak comfortable season is October to April, with October–November and March–April cited as the best of the best for sightseeing and Nile cruising, at around 25–30°C days. May to September is hot (35–45°C in Luxor and Aswan) and generally avoided for touring, though it brings lower cruise prices and the Red Sea stays warm (around 24–28°C water) roughly April to November for diving and beach. Ramadan in 2026 runs roughly 17 February to 19 March; touring continues, but some hours and services shift.
Money and health notes
The currency is the Egyptian Pound, with USD 1 around 48–52 EGP in early–mid 2026 (verify — some forecasts see further depreciation). ATMs are widely available with daily caps around 5,000–10,000 EGP; official bank and exchange offices give better rates than airport counters. Carry small EGP notes for taxis, tips and small vendors. On health, the CDC recommends hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines for essentially all travellers to Egypt; tap water is not considered safe, so stick to bottled or treated water and avoid ice and raw produce.
