Nigeria has one of the shortest hops to Egypt of any long-haul market: EgyptAir flies direct from Lagos to Cairo in about five and a half hours. The trade-off is that Nigeria also faces the strictest entry step of the markets we cover, an airline "OK-to-Board" security pre-clearance rather than a simple e-visa, plus a firm yellow-fever requirement. Plan those early and the rest, from Cairo sightseeing to a Nile cruise, follows easily. Here is how to approach the trip from Nigeria.

Flights from Lagos

EgyptAir operates a direct Lagos (LOS) to Cairo (CAI) route (flight MS876), reported around four direct flights a week with an average flight time of about 5h25m (verify the current frequency). That is the main single-carrier option. One-stop alternatives route via the Gulf hubs (Emirates via Dubai, Qatar via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi), Addis Ababa on Ethiopian, Nairobi on Kenya Airways or Casablanca on Royal Air Maroc. Abuja and Port Harcourt travellers typically connect via Lagos or a Gulf or African hub.

Economy round-trips on LOS-CAI show indicatively from around GBP 469, roughly NGN 900,000 to 1,500,000-plus depending on season and carrier, with the direct EgyptAir fare usually above the cheapest one-stops. The naira conversion is approximate and volatile, so verify live fares at booking.

Entry rules for Nigerian passport holders (read carefully)

This is the most restrictive part, and the sources conflict, so verify carefully with an Egyptian consulate or the airline before booking. Multiple 2026 Nigeria-focused sources say the standard online e-Visa is currently unavailable for ordinary Nigerian passport holders, and that Nigerians instead need an airline-processed "OK-to-Board" (OKTB), an electronic security pre-clearance or permit to fly arranged before departure, often via the airline or an accredited agent, after which the visa may be stamped on arrival. Other aggregator sources still list a USD 25 e-Visa or visa on arrival for Nigerians, which contradicts the OKTB guidance and must be resolved through official channels first. Treat the OKTB requirement as the working assumption and confirm current status directly.

The official e-Visa portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg, exists, but do not rely on it for Nigerian nationals until eligibility is confirmed. The new 1 August 2026 Cairo digital visa on arrival (a QR-code option, USD 36, valid 48 hours, via portal, app or kiosk alongside the paper system) does not override nationality-specific security-clearance rules, so assume the OKTB step still applies. Your passport should have at least six months validity beyond your stay.

Yellow fever is required

Unlike most markets, yellow fever is the key exception for Nigeria. Egypt commonly requires a yellow-fever vaccination certificate from travellers arriving from countries with yellow-fever transmission risk, and Nigeria is such a country, so Nigerian travellers should expect to carry a valid certificate. The certificate becomes valid ten days after vaccination, so plan a travel or yellow-fever clinic visit four to six weeks before you fly. Hepatitis A and typhoid are also recommended, and keep routine vaccines current.

Packages and prices

Egypt is actively marketed to Nigeria, with dedicated "Egypt tours from Nigeria" programmes. The core products pair Cairo and Alexandria sightseeing (Giza pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara, Egyptian Museum) with a Luxor-Aswan Nile cruise covering Karnak, Hatshepsut Temple and the Valley of the Kings. A mid-range all-in Egypt trip from Nigeria is cited around USD 1,200 to 1,500 covering flights, accommodation, meals and site entries, while land-only Nile cruise packages start lower, from about USD 550 for 4-day/3-night. Most Nigerians book through Egypt-based inbound operators selling in USD, sometimes via Lagos-based agents who also handle the OKTB step. Our Nile cruise guide explains the cruise segment; verify current prices with operators.

Best time and money

Prime season is October to April, mild at roughly 20-28C, with February-March and October-November the sweet spots for good weather and fewer December crowds. June to August is hottest (40-43C in the south) and cheapest; December to February is peak and priciest; March-April can bring khamsin dust winds. Nigerian school breaks around December and April align best with Egypt's pleasant weather, while the July-August long vacation coincides with the hottest, cheapest window. On money, Egypt uses the pound and the naira is highly volatile, so budget in USD and confirm rates near departure; carry USD for visa, OKTB and VOA fees and tips, use ATMs and banks over airport counters, and keep cash for markets and taxis while cards cover hotels.

常见问题

Is there a direct flight from Nigeria to Egypt?

Yes. EgyptAir flies direct from Lagos (LOS) to Cairo (CAI) on flight MS876, reported around four flights a week with an average time of about 5h25m (verify the current frequency). Abuja and Port Harcourt travellers usually connect via Lagos or a Gulf or African hub. One-stop options run via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Casablanca.

What is the OK-to-Board requirement for Nigerians?

Multiple 2026 Nigeria-focused sources say the standard e-Visa is currently unavailable for ordinary Nigerian passport holders, and that Nigerians need an airline-processed OK-to-Board (OKTB), an electronic security pre-clearance arranged before departure via the airline or an accredited agent, after which the visa may be stamped on arrival. Sources conflict, so confirm the current status directly with an Egyptian consulate or the airline before booking.

Can Nigerians use the online e-Visa or the new digital VOA?

It is uncertain. Some aggregators still list a USD 25 e-Visa or visa on arrival for Nigerians, but Nigeria-focused sources say the e-Visa is currently unavailable to ordinary Nigerian passport holders. The 1 August 2026 Cairo digital VOA (USD 36, valid 48 hours) does not override nationality-specific security-clearance rules. Assume the OKTB step applies and verify officially.

Do Nigerians need a yellow-fever certificate for Egypt?

Yes, expect to carry one. Egypt commonly requires a yellow-fever certificate from travellers arriving from yellow-fever-risk countries, and Nigeria is one. The certificate is valid from ten days after vaccination, so visit a yellow-fever clinic four to six weeks before you fly. Hepatitis A and typhoid are also recommended.

How much does an Egypt trip from Nigeria cost?

A mid-range all-in trip is cited around USD 1,200 to 1,500 covering flights, accommodation, meals and site entries. Direct LOS-CAI economy fares show from around GBP 469 (roughly NGN 900,000-1,500,000-plus). Land-only Nile cruise packages start lower, from about USD 550 for 4-day/3-night. The naira is volatile, so verify current prices.

When is the best time to visit Egypt from Nigeria?

October to April, when it is mild at around 20-28C, with February-March and October-November the sweet spots. Nigerian December and April school breaks align best with Egypt's pleasant weather, while the July-August long vacation hits the hottest but cheapest window.
