White Desert Trips from Cairo

The gateway is Bahariya Oasis, about four hours southwest of Cairo, where the asphalt ends and the 4x4s take over. From there the desert road runs south through a sequence of landscapes that feel like different planets, ending among the wind-sculpted chalk formations that gave the White Desert its name.
What you see
First the Black Desert, its hills dusted with dark volcanic stones, then Crystal Mountain, a ridge glittering with quartz, and the dunes and springs of the oasis belt. The finale is White Desert National Park: fields of blinding chalk carved by wind into mushrooms, spires and the famous chicken-shaped rock, at their best in the low light of late afternoon.
Is it worth it?
As a landscape, unreservedly. As a single day from Cairo, be honest with yourself: it means fourteen hours or more door to door, with the formations seen in the harsh midday light. The version everyone remembers is the overnight camp, dinner under a sky with no light pollution and the chalk glowing at sunset and dawn, and desert foxes visiting the camp.
