El Fayoum, about 100 km from Cairo, will introduce you to a varied landscape of desert, lakes and fertile agricultural land. Qarun Lake, one of Egypt’s largest natural lakes, offers opportunities for birdwatching and boating, while the surrounding wetlands and lakes attract a variety of migratory birds. Along the way you will see protected areas that are home to waterfalls, rare wildlife and picturesque sand dunes, making the region rewarding for nature lovers. You will also learn about the area’s deep natural history at Wadi Al‑Hitan, the “Valley of the Whales”, a UNESCO World Heritage site containing hundreds of whale fossils that shed light on the evolution of these animals from land‑dwellers to sea giants. The landscape offers chances for hiking, sandboarding and even desert safaris, and you can explore traditional villages such as Tunis Village, known for its pottery workshops and art galleries. Overall, the area combines natural wonders, wildlife and local culture for a varied, outdoors‑focused experience.

Absolutely beautiful and worth the drive! Please note – it is about a 3 to 4 Hour Dr. outside of Cairo. We stopped for lunch at a nice restaurant/hotel before heading to the desert national Park. In the park, you will see a waterfall plus large rock formations which you can climb and take beautiful pictures. You can also go sand snowboarding, which was fun.
