Papyrus has been an important part of Egypt’s history. The raw material comes from the stalk of the Cyperus papyrus plant, which has a brittle interior and a tough exterior and grows in the damp regions of the Nile Delta. Its method of production was once a well‑kept secret, allowing the ancient Egyptians to hold a monopoly over its manufacture and distribution. At the government‑approved Papyrus Institute, located not far from the Pyramids in Giza, you will find a museum and a shop where you can browse a wide selection of hand‑painted papyrus prints. Along the way, staff will talk you through the entire manufacturing process and give a demonstration of exactly how papyrus is made. Prints range from inexpensive pieces to very costly originals, and the items on sale are authentic papyrus — suitable as keepsakes or gifts.
