Alexandria, founded in 332 BC by Alexander the Great and often called the Pearl of the Mediterranean Sea, will provide the setting for a day of historical exploration. You will learn that it is Egypt’s second largest city and its main seaport, whose harbour was once marked by the towering Lighthouse — one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Along the way you will hear how the immense contents of the old library were tragically destroyed by fire and how the sea still keeps some of the city’s secrets; the city of Cleopatra and the tomb of Alexander the Great remain undiscovered. As you move through the city, you will visit key sites that bring those stories to life. The experience includes the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the underground Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the coastal Qaitbay Citadel and the monumental Pompey’s Pillar. You will see a mix of ancient and later landmarks and savour the historical context behind each place as told through the sites themselves. The tour focuses on the city’s long history and the echoes of its past that are still visible today.
