Egypt is an easy reach from Spain: a daily direct flight from Madrid to Cairo of about five hours, then the Pyramids, the temples of Luxor and Aswan, and a slow cruise down the Nile. The Spanish market is strong on guided Nile-cruise-plus-Hurghada packages with Spanish-speaking guides, led by El Corte Inglés Viajes. This page sets out the flights, the visa for Spanish nationals, what a trip costs and when to go, so you can book one of the tours below.
Getting there from Spain
Madrid (MAD) to Cairo (CAI) has roughly one direct flight a day, operated by EgyptAir and Iberia or Iberia Express, averaging about 4h50–5h; EgyptAir runs around seven direct Madrid–Cairo flights a week. Indicative return fares run roughly €93 at the cheapest (December) up to €172 (July), with other listings from about €101–€201 — verify, as these are meta-search figures. Barcelona and other Spanish cities generally connect to Cairo on one stop. Most Red Sea travel from Spain is sold as charter or bundled package rather than scheduled point-to-point, and charter arrivals to Hurghada (HRG), Marsa Alam (RMF) or Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH) must return by charter from the same airport, so confirm the rules with your operator.
Visas for Spanish nationals
Spanish nationals are eligible for the Egyptian e-visa through the official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg; create the application at least seven days before departure. The e-visa costs US$25 single-entry or US$60 multiple-entry for a 30-day stay, with processing around 24–72 hours. A traditional visa on arrival is also available at Egyptian airports for about US$25–30 in cash. From 1 August 2026, Cairo Airport is piloting a digital visa on arrival across all terminals — a QR code replacing the paper sticker, generated via the portal, mobile app or an airport kiosk — at US$36 single-entry (US$30 base plus US$6 processing), with the QR valid 48 hours from issuance; paper visas continue in parallel during the pilot. Unlike France, Spanish nationals need a full passport — the DNI is not accepted — valid at least six months beyond your return. A free Sinai-only stamp applies to Sharm and South Sinai resorts, not Nile Valley travel.
What tours cost
El Corte Inglés Viajes is a leading Spanish packager, selling all-inclusive Nile cruise plus flights and guided tours with Spanish-speaking guides, departing from several Spanish cities. Specialist Spanish-language operators such as Egypt Tours Portal ES, Cruceros Nilo and Holiday Guru sell circuits like an 8-day Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Hurghada, a 10-day cultural plus Red Sea, and a 13-day Cairo, Nile, Alexandria and Hurghada. Indicative package prices run from about €250 to €1,525 depending on hotel category, board and length, with many products around €250–700. Standard inclusions are Spanish-speaking guides, 4–5-star hotels or cruise ships, private transfers and 24-hour assistance. Verify current pricing on the operator sites.
When to go
For Nile cruises the comfortable season is October to April, with daytime around 25–30°C and November often rated the single best month. The Red Sea has warm water from April to November (sea around 24–28°C); the Spanish summer peak of July–August is hot for sightseeing but good for diving. Spanish demand clusters around Semana Santa in spring, the summer holidays, and Navidad in late December and early January, which carries higher prices. Flight data shows July as the most expensive month and December the cheapest for Madrid–Cairo.
What to book
For a first trip, the classic Spanish choice is a guided Nile cruise combined with Cairo, often with a few nights in Hurghada added: Giza and the Egyptian Museum, then Luxor to Aswan by boat. The cruise is the centrepiece, so read our Nile cruise guide before choosing a ship or a month. The tours below are bookable now, many with Spanish-speaking guides.
Money and health
Egypt is cash-heavy, at about 52 EGP per USD in early 2026. Cards work in upscale hotels, better restaurants and tour bookings, but carry Egyptian pounds for souks, taxis, street food and tips; ATMs typically charge 50–100 EGP per withdrawal, so prefer bank or hotel machines, and tip baksheesh in EGP directly to the person. No vaccines are legally required from Spain, though Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Typhoid are commonly recommended — see a doctor 4–6 weeks ahead. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover is strongly advised; consult exteriores.gob.es for official Spanish guidance.
