Egypt is a growing favourite for Romanian travellers, and the flight map explains why. Romanian carriers now link Bucharest and regional cities directly to Hurghada at competitive fares, so a week of Red Sea sun is within easy reach, whether you want an all-inclusive beach break or a classic cultural tour through Cairo and the Nile. This guide walks through flights, visas, prices, timing and what is worth booking.
Getting there: flights and charters
Direct Bucharest (OTP)–Hurghada (HRG) flights are operated by HiSky and FlyOne Romania. From the regions, Bees Airlines Romania runs a weekly Timișoara (TSR)–Hurghada charter on an Airbus A320 with a Saturday rotation, and Animawings, the Romanian leisure carrier, also serves Egyptian Red Sea charter routes (verify its current 2026 program). Fares are keen: Bucharest–Hurghada has been advertised from around EUR 212 non-stop with FlyOne Romania, and on a monthly view December has been cited as the cheapest month (around EUR 86 one-way) and June the most expensive (around EUR 153). Flight time from Bucharest to Hurghada is roughly 3.5 to 4 hours.
Sharm El-Sheikh and Marsa Alam are reached mainly by charter or connection rather than headline scheduled routes, so check current-season availability if either is your target. Because charter schedules shift each season, confirm the exact route, carrier and airport before you book.
Visas: e-Visa, VOA and the Sinai permit
Romanian citizens are not visa-exempt. Egypt offers both an e-Visa, applied for online in advance, and a Visa on Arrival, each for a 30-day stay. The e-Visa is single-entry, valid 90 days from issue, allowing one entry and up to 30 days, and is typically processed in about five to seven business days. The Visa on Arrival is a single-entry 30-day tourist visa, with the standard rate around USD 25 (verify, as the exact figure was not confirmed in Romania-specific sources). Your passport should be valid at least six months beyond arrival, and you should apply only through the official portal at visa2egypt.gov.eg to avoid third-party markups.
From 1 August 2026, Cairo airport began piloting a QR-code digital Visa on Arrival costing USD 36 total (a USD 30 fee plus USD 6 issuance), generated up to 48 hours before travel and valid at Cairo only; Red Sea airports keep the paper sticker. Around 46 countries are eligible, but Romanian inclusion is unconfirmed, so verify. Note as well that the free South Sinai entry permit (around 15 days) covers only the Sharm, Dahab and Taba resort zones; a full visa is needed to travel to mainland Egypt such as Cairo or Luxor.
Packages and cost
Egypt is sold to Romanians two ways: as Red Sea all-inclusive beach packages, with Hurghada dominant, and as classic Cairo, Alexandria and Nile-cruise cultural tours, plus diving and Christian-heritage itineraries. Major Romanian operators for Egypt include Christian Tour and Dertour among others (verify current 2026 programs). Package prices vary by season and board and were not confirmed in our sources, so verify with the operator; as a lift-cost anchor, standalone Bucharest–Hurghada flights start from around EUR 212. Beach and all-inclusive is the volume product, with cultural Nile and Cairo tours and diving the differentiated add-ons.
Best time to go
The Red Sea resorts are best from October to April, with daytime temperatures around 22–28°C and ideal conditions for beach and sightseeing alike. Divers get peak visibility from November to April. Summer (June–August) runs hot, near 35°C, but sea breezes and resort pools keep the coast comfortable, and Romanian summer-holiday charters operate through the season.
What to book, and adding the Nile
If you want more than the beach, Romania's cultural tours are a strong fit for Egypt. From Hurghada you can add a pyramids day trip, a desert safari or a diving package, but the real depth comes from the river. See our Nile cruise guide for how a Luxor–Aswan sailing works and how to plan the cultural half of your trip. Remember that any travel beyond the Sinai resort zone requires a full visa, not just the free permit.
Money and health
The currency is the Egyptian pound, around 51.8 to the US dollar as of March 2026 (verify the live rate). Bring EUR or USD cash to exchange, as Romanian leu is not readily accepted, though ATMs and card payment are widespread in the resorts. No vaccines are required to enter, but the CDC recommends Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and typhoid for most travellers, and you should drink only bottled or filtered water.
Частые вопросы
Which airlines fly direct from Romania to Egypt?
HiSky and FlyOne Romania operate direct Bucharest–Hurghada flights, Bees Airlines Romania runs a weekly Timișoara–Hurghada charter, and Animawings also serves Red Sea charter routes (verify its current program). Sharm El-Sheikh and Marsa Alam are usually reached by charter or connection.
Do Romanian citizens need a visa for Egypt?
Yes. Romanian nationals are not visa-exempt. You can apply for the e-Visa online in advance (single entry, up to 30 days, processed in about five to seven business days) or get a Visa on Arrival. Cairo airport also began a digital VOA pilot on 1 August 2026, though Romanian eligibility is unconfirmed. Use visa2egypt.gov.eg.
How much does an Egypt trip from Romania cost?
As a lift-cost anchor, standalone Bucharest–Hurghada flights have been advertised from around EUR 212 non-stop, dropping to roughly EUR 86 one-way in December. Full package prices depend on season, board and itinerary and were not confirmed in our sources, so verify with operators such as Christian Tour or Dertour.
When is the cheapest and best time to visit?
For weather, October to April is ideal (around 22–28°C), with diving visibility peaking November to April. For fares, December has been cited as the cheapest month for Bucharest–Hurghada and June the most expensive. Summer is hot near 35°C but stays viable thanks to sea breezes and pools.
Can I combine a Red Sea beach stay with a Nile cruise?
Yes, and it is a popular Romanian itinerary. Beach all-inclusive in Hurghada pairs well with a Cairo and Nile-cruise cultural add-on. Just note that travelling beyond the Sinai resort zone requires a full Egyptian visa rather than the free South Sinai permit.
How long is the flight from Bucharest to Hurghada?
Bucharest to Hurghada is roughly 3.5 to 4 hours direct, among the shorter hops to Egypt's Red Sea. Charter seats are often sold inside tour packages, so compare a bundled package against a standalone flight from around EUR 212 to see which suits your plans.
